Miners Rally for Comeback Win against Grizzlies

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners posted four runs in the eighth inning and picked up a 4-1 comeback win against the Gateway Grizzlies Monday night at Rent One Park.
Jon Eisen hit a pinch-hit two run double and Phil Butler knocked in two runs on a single to help the Miners pick up a late comeback win in the series opener. The loss was charged to Luke Westphal (1-3), who walked the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning.
Gateway (36-20) picked up an early run and held Southern Illinois (32-23) scoreless for the first seven innings of the game. Prior to entering the eighth inning, Gateway pitchers fired 19 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to Saturday night at Traverse City.
Tommy Richards picked up a one-out single in the first inning and came in to score on a Michael Wing RBI double to give Gateway an early 1-0 lead.
The lead stayed that way until the eighth inning.
Gateway 22-year-old rookie starting pitcher Tyler Thompson shined once again, tossing six scoreless innings while scattering seven hits. The Cuba, Mo. native struck out five batters and walked only one.
Westphal pitched a scoreless seventh inning before walking the only two batters he faced in the eighth.
Richard went 2-for-3 to lead the Grizzlies offense.
Gateway and Southern Illinois play game two of their series Tuesday night. Left-hander Kerry Kelley (2-2) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 at Rent One Park.
