Charlotte Knights News Release

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - With three Indianapolis natives and another Indiana-born player, it was a homecoming of sorts for a number of Charlotte Knights on Monday as the team played in Indianapolis for the first time this season. For one Charlotte veteran, however, Monday's game served as another milestone in what has been a stellar career.

Backed by a Jordan Danks home run -- the 50th of his Knights career -- and 18 hits, Bobby Doran threw six solid innings as the Charlotte Knights beat the Indianapolis Indians 8-3 in the opening game of their four-game series from Victory Field in Indianapolis, IN on Monday. The win was Charlotte's sixth over their last seven games.

Danks, who is in his fifth season with Charlotte, continued to move up the ranks in Charlotte Knights franchise history on Monday. The Austin, TX native homered in the first inning thus scoring the 238th run in his Knights career, which passed Joe Borchard for first all-time in franchise history. Already the all-time leader in triples and walks, Danks added one more notch to his belt on Monday. Overall, he went 2-for-5 with one run scored, the home run, and two RBIs. He is now six games away from tying Borchard for most all-time and just 10 hits away from tying him for first in hits.

While Danks was impressive at the plate, so were his Charlotte teammates, who continued to pound out a remarkable amount of hits. All nine Charlotte batters had at least one hit in the game, while six Charlotte hitters had at least two hits. Indiana natives Josh Phegley (1-for-4), and Micah Johnson (3-for-6 with an RBI) chipped in on Monday in front of their hometown crowd. Phegley, a Terre Haute, IN native, extended his hit streak to 15 consecutive games with a triple in the first inning. Johnson is one of three Indianapolis natives (Dan Black and Jarrett Casey are the others). Michael Taylor also had three hits on the day for Charlotte.

Andy Wilkins was named the International League's Batter of the Week earlier and the day and he followed up that honor with a three-hit day at the plate. Wilkins -- the IL home run leader with 21 -- went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

Doran (2-0, 5.73) tossed six solid innings en route to his second consecutive win with the Knights. Making just his second career start with the Knights, Doran allowed three runs on four hits over six innings. He walked three and struck-out four. Parker Frazier came on in relief of Doran and tossed two shutout innings. Maikel Cleto worked a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on the game.

Charlotte scored six of their eight runs off of Indianapolis starter Jay Jackson (5-4, 5.15), who was charged with the loss.

The two teams will continue their series on Tuesday with game two of the four-game series. RHP Erik Johnson (3-6, 6.80) gets the start for the Knights, while RHP Brandon Cumpton (5-1, 1.50) - the reigning IL Pitcher of the Week - will start for the Indians. Pre-game radio coverage of Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
