Barons Cruise Past Suns 9-5 in Series Opener

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Early offense and a stellar seven innings from starter Scott Snodgress helped the the Birmingham Barons (16-13, 45-54) defeat the Jacksonville Suns (18-11, 54-45) 9-5 in Monday night's series-opening ballgame from Bragan Field.

Scott Snodgress (W, 6-7) earned the win for Birmingham, surrendering just one unearned run on three hits in seven innings, finishing with three walks and five strikeouts. Snodgress has not given up a single earned run against the Suns in 19 total innings on the 2014 season.

Scott Lyman (L, 0-1) took the loss in his AA debut, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out three Barons in five innings of work.

Frankie Reed gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits, while walking three and striking out three in his three innings of relief.

Greg Nappo walked a batter and struck out two in his hitless top of the ninth inning.

Birmingham opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning on Monday night. The Barons plated a run on throwing error from Scott Lyman, another on a wild pitch from Lyman and a third on Trayce Thompson's sacrifice fly to give the Barons a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Jacksonville was able to counter back with a run to cut Birmingham's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Burg scored on a two-out throwing error made by third baseman Jeremy Farrell on a ball hit off the bat of Isaac Galloway to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Barons had another three-run frame in the top of the fourth to open up a 6-1 lead. A Dan Wagner sacrifice fly, a Jared Mitchell RBI double and a Trayce Thompson RBI single extended Birmingham's lead to 6-1 after the top of the fourth inning.

Christian Marrero pushed Birmingham's lead to 7-1 as Rangel Ravelo came in to score on his sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning.

The Barons added to the lead in the top of the eighth inning, with Dan Wagner's (HR, 2) two-run homer to right extending the lead to 9-1 in favor of Birmingham.

Jacksonville struck back in the bottom of the eighth, receiving a RBI double from Joe Benson to cut Birmingham's lead to 9-2 after eight innings of play.

The Suns did not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three times with two outs to cap off the scoring on Monday night. A J.T. Realmuto RBI single and a ringing two-run double from Joe Benson allowed Jacksonville to cut Birmingham's lead to 9-5.

The Suns and Barons will be back at it on Tuesday for a doubleheader, with first pitch of game one set for 5:35 p.m. ET. In game one, the Suns will send out right-hander Jay Rogers (5-2, 3.57) while the Barons will counter with a righty of their own in Mike Recchia (5-2, 2.85). Game two will start approximately 45 minutes following the completion of game one.
