Akron RubberDucks News Release

(Akron, Ohio) July 21, 2014 - Richmond starting pitcher Jack Snodgrass held the Akron RubberDucks to four hits through the first seven innings Monday night as he led the EL West Leading Flying Squirrels to a 2-0 shutout victory at Canal Park.

Snodgrass (9-3) set Richmond up for the win by striking out five batters and walking three.

The Flying Squirrels pushed the RubberDucks to their fifth-straight loss, the longest losing streak the team has seen this season. Akron fell four and a half games behind Richmond in the EL West race. Three of Akron's five total hits on the night were clubbed by Jordan Smith. Smith hit lead-off for the second time this season and extended his hitting streak to eight games with the help of a double and two singles, all up the right field line.

The Flying Squirrels (61-41) scattered their two runs in the second and sixth innings. In the second frame, third baseman Ricky Oropesa reached on a walk and crossed home on a Myles Schroder RBI single. Schroder drove in the second run as well, this time with a triple, to take a 2-0 lead.

Overshadowed by Snodgrass's outing was Akron starter and EL all-star Joe Colon (8-5). Despite picking up the loss, Colon pitched five solid innings in which he gave up four hits and one run while fanning six to come within one strikeout of his season-high. Colon has gone 0-1 in four starts this month despite giving up three runs in 21 2/3 innings. The righthander's last win was June 29.

Reliever Enosil Tejeda stepped to the mound in the sixth inning, where he would remain for two frames. Tejeda struck out four batters and combined with the rest of the Akron pitching staff to fan 13 batters.

Richmond closer Hunter Strickland picked up his fifth save after pitching the final inning and striking out one.

Akron and Richmond will continue the three-game series at Canal Park Tuesday at 7:05. RHP Will Roberts (10-9, 3.63) will get the ball for the RubberDucks, while the Flying Squirrels are expected to activate RHP Clayton Blackburn (3-5, 3.10) from the DL to make the start. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.

The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is its 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks.
