Higdon, Mavericks put on hitting clinic against Worcester

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - After taking two victories against the North Shore Navigators the day before, the Worcester Bravehearts surrendered 18 hits in a 10-6 loss to the Seacoast Mavericks on July 21 on Leary Field in Portsmouth, N.H.
In his first game since July 16, second baseman Darian Ramage hit a three-run home run to give the Bravehearts a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
But the Mavericks posted five runs off Worcester starter Miles Sheehan including a two-run home run by left fielder Dakota Higdon. The University of North Florida junior finished 3-5 at the plate with four RBI and hit another two-run shot in the seventh inning.
Designated hitter Martin Tavares went 4-5 in the leadoff spot for the Mavericks.
The Bravehearts took a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning thanks in part to a solo home run by right fielder Jordan Berry, but it was not enough for a victory.
Seacoast posted another big inning with five runs in the seventh off relievers Joe Saia and Hopedale, Mass., native Ian Strom. Saia took the loss after allowing the game-winning run to reach in the seventh inning. The Eckerd College senior tossed three innings and allowed two runs but only one earned.
Strom coughed up the go-ahead home run by Higdon in the seventh inning to give the Mavericks an 8-6 lead.
Mavericks reliever Michael Nocera pitched a scoreless seventh to collect his first win of the season. Seacoast pitcher James Vernon pitched two scoreless innings to close out the victory for the home team.
The 23-17 Bravehearts return home for a matchup with the North Shore Navigators at 7:05 p.m. July 22 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
