Cipriano, Cockerton and Maltz Named Players of the Week

July 21, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

BOSTON (July 21, 2014) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Week 11's Warrior Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week and the Cascade Rookie of the Week today.

This week, Mark Cockerton was awarded offensive honors for his five goal contribution in the Rochester Rattler's 10-7 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks, and Charlie Cipriano was credited with reviving the Denver Outlaws from the backstop out, allowing them to come from behind and defeat the Florida Launch 13-10. Rookie attackman Derek Maltz made his MLL debut over the weekend, netting four goals for the Ohio Machine in their 13-12 overtime victory over the Charlotte Hounds.

This is not Cockerton's first taste of Player of the Week fame. In Week 9 he was recognized for his staggering six point performance in merely his fourth professional game earning Cascade Rookie honors; now, two weeks later, he has earned more accolades, his offensive contributions continuing to impress. Cockerton netted the first five goals for the Rattlers, spanning over three quarters and making up half of the team's total score.

When Cipriano relieved Jesse Schwartzman of his goaltending duties midway through the second quarter of the Florida - Denver showdown, the pace of the game changed in the Outlaws' favor. He shut down Florida's scoring, only allowing three goals on 14 shots on goal fired, giving Denver's offense time to step it up.

First year Maltz finally got the chance to make an impression in his professional debut last Saturday, and it is safe to say that the Ohio Machine were grateful for his presence. The attackman from Syracuse completed a hat trick and netted a powerplay goal in only five shots on net in a hard-fought game that stretched into sudden-victory overtime.

This coming weekend, watch the Denver Outlaws take on the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium on CBS Sports Network. Faceoff is at 4:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, July 26. Then, the Florida Launch will host the Boston Cannons for the first of their home-and-home series at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN3.com and syndicated networks.
