San Antonio Missions News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight is the opener of a three-game series between the San Antonio Missions and the Corpus Christi Hooks at Wolff Stadium. This is the first meeting between the South Division rivals since mid-June, when the Missions took three-of-four at the Wolff. The clubs have split their 16 meetings this season. San Antonio (50-50, 14-16) enters play Monday fourth in the South Division, second-half, 5.5 games behind first-place Midland (57-42, 19-10) and two games back of second-place Corpus Christi (50-50, 16-14). The Missions have dropped seven of their last 10 games, but will look to rebound at home, where they are 26-24 this season. The Hooks have struggled on the road in 2014, entering just 21-29.

PITCHING MATCHUP: San Antonio will feature a marquee pitching lineup for this evening's series opener. Starting the game will be Jesse Hahn, who began the season with San Antonio before being promoted to San Diego in early June. In seven starts with the Padres, Hahn was 5-2 with a 2.21 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 47:16 over 40.2 innings. San Diego is having Hahn make a start with the Missions in order to keep his endurance while the team resets its rotation for the second half. The 24-year-old, right-hander is expected to throw a couple of innings tonight before heading back to the Padres' rotation. Following Hahn for the Missions is fellow righty Joe Ross, who will be making his Double-A debut. Last Thursday, Ross was promoted to San Antonio from High-A Lake Elsinore, where he was 8-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 starts. Joe, the younger brother of Padres' All-Star hurler Tyson Ross, was a California League Mid-Season All-Star. In 101.2 innings for the Storm, Ross struck out 87 batters against just 28 walks. Ross, 21, was selected by San Diego in the 1st round (25th overall) of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. He entered the 2014 season as the No. 10 prospect in the Padres' system according to Baseball America. On the hill for Corpus Christi is right-hander Jordan Jankowski, who is 3-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 22 games (eight starts) this season. Jankowski has faced the Missions three times (all in relief), allowing three runs in 11.1 innings. His last appearance against San Antonio was on June 17 at the Wolff, where he fanned a batter in 2.2 hitless innings. Houston originally selected Jankowski in the 34th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Peters Township HS in McMurray, PA. Jankowski opted to attend Catawba College (Salisbury, NC) instead of signing, but four years later, the Astros took him in the exact same round.

LAST GAME: It took 12 innings, but San Antonio was able to snap a season-long, seven-game road losing streak with a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Midland Sunday night at Security Bank Ballpark. The RockHounds raced out to a 5-1 lead on Missions' starter James Needy, who allowed a career-high, six walks in his six innings of work. San Antonio began to chip away in the fifth, plating a pair of runs on RBI singles by Yeison Asencio and Rymer Liriano. After cutting the lead to one in the sixth, the Missions pulled even in the top of the seventh on Hunter Renfroe's RBI double. Renfroe finished the game 2-for-6 and now has hit safely in a club-high, tying 10 straight. San Antonio's bullpen trio of Michael Dimock, Frank Garces and John Hussey kept the game tied by putting up zeroes from the 7th -11th innings. In the top of the 12th, the Missions caught a break when Liriano was able to score the go-ahead run on a failed pick-off attempt by reliever Ryan Doolittle. The right-hander tried to fake a throw to third base, only to have the ball come out of his hand and skip by the foul line, allowing Liriano to score from third. Hussey (4-5) worked around a leadoff single in the bottom half to lock up the Missions' first win at Midland since May 11.

TROUBLE IN THE CLUTCH: The Missions are hitting just .186 (27-for-145) with RISP over their last 15 games. Last night they went just 3-for-19 with RISP, leading 11 men on base. The 19 opportunities were a season-high.

HOMER HAPPY: Though they've cooled in the category of late (two HR in last 10), San Antonio has hit 81 homers in 2014, which is tied for the 5th most at the Double-A level. The Missions have out-homered their opponents by 28 (81-53) this season and have a 33-18 edge at the Wolff. San Antonio leads the Texas League in homers by 8. They have not led the TL in the category since 1992 when they hit 92. Last season, the Missions had just 69 homers through July.

ROSTER MOVEMENT: The Missions added another bat yesterday in shortstop Diego Goris. The 23-year-old native of the Dominican Republic arrived from High-A Lake Elsinore, where he was batting .324 (8th in the CAL League) with 27 doubles, two triples, 13 homers, 61 RBI and 66 runs scored in 89 games. To make room for Goris, RHP Josh Geer (ankle) was placed on the 7-day DL. Goris went 1-for-5 with a run scored in his Double-A debut last night at Midland. Also officially arriving in San Antonio is RHP R.J. Alvarez. The Royal Palm Beach, FL native came over in Friday night's highly publicized trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Padres sent All-Star closer Huston Street along with Missions' right-hander Trevor Gott to the Angels in exchange for infielders Taylor Lindsey and Jose Rondon and RHPs Alvarez and Elliot Morris. Alvarez was the only player sent to San Antonio. In 21 games this season for Arkansas, the 23-year old pitched to a minuscule 0.33 ERA (1 ER/27 IP), while sporting a K:BB ratio of 38:10. Los Angeles selected R.J. in the 3rd round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Atlantic University. To make room for Hahn, San Antonio placed 1B/C Jason Hagerty (oblique) on the 7-day DL.
