INDIANAPOLIS - A 6'2", 200 lb., left-handed shooting forward and Crystal, Minnesota native, 24 year-old Cory Thorson agreed to terms with the Indy Fuel for the 2014-15 ECHL season, the team announced Monday. A former standout at the NCAA Division 1 level for the St. Cloud (MN) State Huskies, 2014-15 marks Thorson's first campaign in professional hockey.
"Cory is a skilled forward who has the ability to score big goals," said Fuel Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman on Monday. "He was a big part of a very strong program in St. Cloud and we're excited to welcome him aboard."
In four seasons with St. Cloud State, Thorson tallied 28 goals and 57 total points in 131 games played from 2010 to 2014. In 2012-13, Thorson helped the Huskies clinch the school's first-ever berth in the Frozen Four.
"I'm very excited and thankful for this opportunity with the Fuel," said Thorson on Monday. "It's going to be a young group next year, but to be a part of a new team is something special and I can't wait to get started." A self-described "power forward," Thorson says he's looking forward to playing for Hillman in 2014-15. "[Hillman]'s an energetic, passionate guy who has a great record at the professional level," said Thorson. "You've got to love playing for a coach so committed to winning and I'm excited about what lies ahead."
Prior to his collegiate career, Thorson was dominant in two seasons at the junior level with the NAHL's Owatonna Express. In 116 combined appearances from 2008 to 2010, Thorson potted 52 goals and 102 total points along with 45 combined penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating.
In 2014-15, the Indy Fuel, the proud "AA" affiliate of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and AHL's Rockford IceHogs, drop the puck on their first season in the ECHL. Season ticket packages for the Fuel's inaugural campaign are available now starting at just under $12 per game!
