Machine's Derek Maltz Named Rookie of the Week

July 21, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Ohio Machine News Release

COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 21, 2014) - Major League Lacrosse announced Monday that Ohio Machine attackman Derek Maltz was named the Cascade Rookie of the Week after his performance in Ohio's 13-12 overtime victory against the Charlotte Hounds on July 19.

Maltz scored a game-high four goals in his first MLL game since finishing his career at Syracuse University. Missing three of the team's top five scorers for the game, Maltz became the fifth Machine player, joining Peter Baum, Kyle Harrison, Marcus Holman and Logan Schuss, to score more than three goals in a game this season. Maltz's four goals came on only six shots.

"I had a great experience playing with an awesome group of teammates," Maltz said. "I just wanted to go out there and have fun, make the most of my opportunity and most importantly get the win."

Mike Cockerton of the Rochester Rattlers was awarded the Warrior Offensive Player of the Week. Cockerton scored five goals, two of which came on the power play, in Rochester's 10-7 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Denver's Charlie Cipriano was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week after coming into the game in the second quarter and backstopping the Outlaws to a 13-10 victory over the Florida Launch. Cipriano made 11 saves on 14 shots as Denver outscored Florida 8-2 in the second half to secure the win.

The Machine returns to Selby Stadium on July 26 at 4:30 p.m. when the team takes on the Denver Outlaws. Tickets for the game against Charlotte start at $12 and can be purchased by calling 614-754-1973 or visiting www.theohiomachine.com/tickets.
