July 21, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte first baseman Andy Wilkins, who hit two home runs in Sunday's game at BB&T Ballpark, was named as the International League's Batter of the Week for the period from July 14-July 20, as announced by the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Inc. earlier today. The award is the second for Wilkins in his career. He earned International League Batter of the Week honors last season for the period of July 15-21.
Wilkins had a wonderful week at the plate for the Charlotte Knights, who took three of four games from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in a shortened week due to the All-Star Break. A native of Tulsa, OK, Wilkins hit .647 (11-for-17) with seven runs scored, one double, five home runs, and eight RBIs over the four-game series. Wilkins has enjoyed hitting against the RailRiders and owns a .618 batting average (21-for-34) with 12 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 14 RBIs over eight games against the club this year.
For the season, the University of Arkansas product is hitting .271 (94-for-347) with 49 runs scored, 23 doubles, one triple, 21 home runs, and 54 RBIs in 89 games with the Knights. He leads the league in home runs (21), total bases (182), and extra base hits (45). The Charlotte slugger is second in slugging percentage (.524) and has hit a home run once every 16.52 at-bats, which is tops in the IL.
Wilkins is the fourth Charlotte Knights player to earn weekly honors from the IL this season. RHP Scott Carroll (April 7=1B$B!>=1B(B13), LHP Charlie Leesman (May 5=1B$B!>=1B(B11), and LHP Eric Surkamp (June 16=1B$B!>=1B(B22) all earned IL Pitcher of the Week honors this year.
The Knights will open a four-game series with the Indianapolis Indians tonight at 7:05 p.m. from Victory Field in Indianapolis, IN. RHP Bobby Doran (1-0, 7.20) gets the start for the Knights against RHP Jay Jackson (5-3, 4.62) for the Indians. Pre-game radio coverage of tonight's game begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com.
