Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sunday, July 20, 2014) - Erick "Cubo" Torres' 14th goal of the season fell short as Chivas USA saw an end to their five-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 loss to D.C. United on Sunday night at RFK Stadium. Torres' scoring streak continued as he converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute for his sixth goal in six games. Unfortunately for the Goats, the home side had priorly scored three of their own, stopping Wilmer Cabrera's side from earning their sixth consecutive result.

Both teams came out looking to test each other in the initial minutes of the game, but it was D.C. United who opened the scoreboard first in the 25th minute. A foul on United's Chris Rolfe by Oswaldo Minda inside the box made referee Fotis Bazakos award the home side with a penalty kick that forward Eddie Johnson converted for the 1-0 lead.

As the game headed into halftime, the Goats attempted to look for the equalizer with a combination of passes by Marvin Chavez and Agustin Pelletieri inside the box. The Honduran midfielder heeled the ball back to Pelletieri, but the Argentine's pass to the middle of the box didn't find an executor.

Coming into the second half, Chivas USA continued to push numbers forward in search of a goal when in the 56th minute, Red-and-White defender Donny Toia sent a long ball to Mauro Rosales as the midfielder was making his way into the box. The Argentine player sent a cross to Torres, but the striker's shot went off frame and over the crossbar.

Just three minutes later, D.C. extended their lead through an indirect free kick. Defender Eriq Zavaletacleared the ball with a header, but the ball ended up in Perry Kitchen's feet, and alone against Kennedy, the midfielder surpassed the Red-and-White goalie with a powerful shot for the 2-0 advantage in the 59th minute.

D.C. United's attack didn't stop there and in the 70th minute Eddie Johnson sent a ball to Chris Korb as he was running up the left flank. Meanwhile, Luis Silva sneaked into the box finding enough space to collect the pass from Korb and beat Kennedy through the far post for the 3-0 lead.

Chivas USA brought in some fresh legs by letting defender Akira Kaji make his professional debut in Major League Soccer since signing with the Red-and-White organization in late June. With a bit of a spark going their way in the trailing minutes of the match, Rosales was taken down inside the box, awarding the visiting side with a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Torres didn't hesitate and with a low shot extended his scoring streak to six games for the final 3-1 result in the 84th minute.

Chivas USA will now head back to Los Angeles to prepare for their final visit to Colorado Rapids on Friday at 7 p.m. (PT). The match will be televised on Time Warner Cable Deportes and will also be available on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information, follow the club on Twitter andFacebook.
