Mud Hens Complete Sweep of Bats in 4-2 Victory

Louisville Bats News Release

TOLEDO, OH - A two-run double by Brandon Douglas of the Toledo Mud Hens in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 deadlock on Sunday night at Fifth Third Field, sending the Louisville Bats to a 4-2 defeat and keeping the team winless since the All-Star break.

With the loss, Louisville concludes a forgettable five-game series in Toledo, getting swept by their division rival while only scoring five runs and hitting one-for-32 with runners in scoring position.

Louisville's offensive woes continued on Sunday until the seventh inning, when they mounted a rally to knot the game up at two. After not being able to scratch across any runs on Mud Hens' starter Robbie Ray, the Bats quickly went to work on reliever Chad Smith to start the frame.

After a Steve Selsky single greeted Smith, Rey Navarro followed with a double into the right centerfield gap to cut the lead in half. Just when it looked like Toledo may get out of the inning with no further damage, Jason Bourgeois legged out an infield single with Navarro running from third, tying the game at two and giving Louisville its first hit with a runner in scoring position in the series.

The Bats hopes were quickly dashed, however, in the bottom of the seventh when Douglas tagged a double down the left field line off reliever Elvin Ramirez (L, 1-2). Although Ryan Dennick was able to get Louisville out of the jam and combine with Adam Russell to work a perfect eighth inning, the Bats couldn't get anything going at the plate over the final two frames, leading the team to its sixth straight loss and sinking their record to two games under .500.

Toledo had taken the early lead with runs in the first and third inning, but Bats starter Scott Diamond, who was making his organizational debut, settled down and at one point retired 11 in a row. The left-hander got a no-decision, but was solid overall, going six innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and no walks. Diamond did allow a third inning home run to Ben Guez.

Ray's starting effort for the Mud Hens was even more stellar, as he also went six innings and allowed four hits. No runs came across, however, and he registered four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Daniel Schlereth (W, 1-1) was flawless in his one-and-a-third innings to get the victory, and Justin Miller earned his fifth save.

Louisville was able to string some offense together early in the game, but was once again done in by a lack of hitting with runners on the base paths, finishing this game 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Bourgeois, Selsky, and recently signed Donnie Murphy each had two hits for the Bats. It was Bourgeois' 30th multi-hit game of the year, which leads the team.

Louisville returns home tomorrow night to start an eight-day, nine-game home stand at Louisville Slugger Field, starting with a four-game series against the Columbus Clippers. Monday night's 7:05 tilt will feature RHP Dylan Axelrod (6-7, 4.50) making his Louisville debut against Clippers RHP Gabriel Arias (3-2, 4.64).
