Clay Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Bees Win
July 20, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
Caleb Clay threw a three-hit complete game shutout as the Bees defeated the Las Vegas 51s on Sunday afternoon 3-0. It was the first time a Bees pitcher had thrown a complete-game shutout since Barry Enright did it on July 31, 2012. Clay finished with six strikeouts and picked up his third win of the season in five starts for the Bees this year.
"I established my fastball early on both sides of the plate and slowly mixed in my other three pitches," said Clay. "I tried to keep them off guard and keep them honest and keep them guessing. Of course, our defense really helped me out."
Las Vegas starter Rafael Montero (4-3) was handed the loss after putting in four innings of work allowing five hits and one run collecting three strikeouts.
The Bees opened the scoring in the second inning when Tony Campana drove in Tommy Field with a single to center field. Campana picked up two more RBIs in the sixth inning when Luis Martinez and Vance Albitz crossed the plate on a ground ball to right field. Campana finished the afternoon 3-for-5 to go with the three RBIs. J.B. Shuck and Martinez each picked up two hits for the Bees.
"(Clay) did a great job of mixing speeds and hitting his spots," said Salt Lake manager Keith Johnson. "He kept those guys off balance. They weren't able to get themselves into deep counts over and over against. He didn't throw fast balls when he got into those counts. He had confidence to get himself out of those situations and all of his pitches. He did a great job today of finishing his innings."
The Bees start the second half of the homestand on Monday night. Every Monday night is Family Night at Smith's Ballpark where fans can purchase four tickets and four hot dogs for $20. Additional information and tickets can be found at slbees.com or at Smith's Ballpark box office.
