State College Spikes News Release

TROY, NY - Rowan Wick reached base for the 25th consecutive game to set a new State College Spikes record, but the Tri-City ValleyCats collected 14 hits to sink the Spikes, 12-2, on Sunday evening at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Wick singled to center field in the sixth inning to extend his string past the previous club record of 24 games, set by David Rubinstein over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The North Vancouver, BC native also extended his hitting streak on the road to 10 games.

The Spikes (26-10) also maintained a tie with Hudson Valley for the best record in the New York-Penn League despite the loss, and extended their Pinckney Division lead over Batavia to 7 1/2 games after the Muckdogs were swept by Connecticut in a doubleheader on Sunday.

State College scored both of its runs in the third inning. Jake Stone led off the inning by reaching base on an error, and after Brian O'Keefe and Jhohan Acevedo both singled, Darren Seferina drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the game's first run. Robelys Reyes followed with a fielder's choice to knock in the other run.

O'Keefe, a native of Albany making his return home to the Tri-City area, went 1-for-3 with a walk after delivering two hits and a walk in last night's win.

Tri-City (24-12) used four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and four more in the eighth to power their win. Juan Santana went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in five runs to lead the ValleyCats attack.

Nick Tanielu and Jamie Ritchie each produced 2 hits and 2 runs batted in for Tri-City as well.

Spikes starter Fernando Baez (2-1) took the loss after yielding five runs on five hits and three walks over four innings of work. Baez also recorded six strikeouts on the game.

Tri-City starter Austin Chrismon (4-2) struck out the first six batters he faced, and fanned a total of eight over five innings for the win. Chrismon allowed both State College runs, one of them earned, on three hits and two walks.

Monday, the Spikes and ValleyCats complete their three-game set with a 7:00 p.m. rubber match at Joseph L. Bruno Staduim. State College will send right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon (1-1) to the mound, while Tri-City is set to go with right-hander Joe Musgrove (2-1).
