Vancouver pounds out season-high 17 hits but cannot make up ground on Spokane

July 20, 2014 - Northwest League (NWL1) - Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - The Vancouver Canadians pounded out a season-high 17 hits en route to a 12-2 victory in Tri-City on Saturday night. The win, Vancouver's 23rd of the first half keeps them one game back of Spokane with two games to play as the Indians throttled Everett 12-3 to move to within a game of the first half North Division pennant.

Vancouver SS Franklin Barreto continued his torrid offensive pace with a 3-for-5 night collecting three RBI to bring his league-leading total to 32 while 3B Alexis Maldonado also went 3-for-5 with three runs scored as the Canadians torched LHP Helmis Rodriguez over his 4 2/3 innings of work managing nine hits and six runs early to cruise to the series opening victory.

LHP Jairo Labourt was splendid over his six innings as he scattered three harmless base hits while striking out four to improve to 2-2 on the summer while LHP Tim Mayza (1.0IP) and RHP Mark Biggs (2.0IP) came into secure the lopsided victory with Biggs giving up a lone run in the top of the 9th inning.

With the win, Vancouver improves to 23-13 (.639) through 36 regular season games, one game shy of Spokane who picked up a 12-3 victory at home over the Everett Aquasox (10-26). This means that a Spokane win on Sunday will eliminate the Canadians from the first half pennant chase regardless of a Vancouver win over the Dust Devils.
