Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - Starting pitcher Preston Olson struck out a season-high 12 batters on Saturday night but the Evansville Otters (30-21) lost 5-4 in 11 innings to the Southern Illinois Miners.
Outfielder John Schultz also became the Otters franchise record holder with his 11th career triple.
Olson allowed two runs on two hits in 7.2 innings but left with the no-decision.
Evansville rallied back from two separate deficits in the game but a Ryan Cavan 11th inning RBI single pushed Southern Illinois ahead for the series win. Game three of the series is on Sunday at Bosse Field.
Southern Illinois led early with a sacrifice fly from former Otter infielder Frank Martinez. The ball was caught by sliding center fielder John Schultz on the warning track and the relay throw from shortstop Corey Urquhart threw out Jay Austin trying to score from second.
Down 1-0, Evansville was unable to tie the game until the bottom of the seventh inning. After starter Michael Carden was taken out after 6.0 scoreless innings, Schultz hit the go-ahead triple for the 2-1 lead. Infielder Phillip Wilson added an RBI single, one of three hits on the night, for the two run edge.
Unfortunately for the Otters, Southern Illinois would plate three runs in the eighth. Martinez struck again with a two-run double to left-center to tie the game and Marquis Riley pushed Southern Illinois up 4-3 with another double to center field.
Trailing 4-3, Evansville took advantage of a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth to get J.R. Higley on base. He then scored on a Kolin Conner double to right-center.
The game stayed a 4-4 tie into the 11th when Martinez led off with a double, left the game with an injury, and pinch runner Tyler Booth scored on the Cavan single. The Otters moved two men into scoring position in the bottom of the 11th but closer Derrick Miramontes struck out Conner to end the game.
Evansville will have LHP Zach Fowler (1-1, 3.38 ERA) on the mound on Sunday. First pitch is 5:05 pm CDT at Bosse Field. Fans wishing to purchase tickets can call 812-435-8686. The game will be broadcast live on WUEV 91.5 FM. Play by play announcer Mike Radomski will have the call beginning at 4:45 pm CDT.
