Ohio Machine Down Charlotte Hounds in Overtime

The Ohio Machine moved into a tie for fourth in the league with a thrilling overtime victory over the Charlotte Hounds Saturday at Selby Stadium.

The Machine held a 12-11 lead with less than a minute to play before Charlotte's Ryan Young equalized with just 1.9 seconds on the clock. The teams took a few possessions each in the extra period before Machine midfielder Tom Schreiber broke through with the winning goal after five minutes of overtime.

The two teams traded goals to start the game before Ohio midfielder Peter Baum scored his club-record 29th goal of the year. Rookie attackman Derek Maltz followed up with his first career goal to give the Machine a 3-1 lead.

After Maltz's goal, the game went 12 minutes without a score until Justin Ward got the Hounds back on the board. Machine attackman Kevin Cooper brought Ohio's lead up to 4-2 off of face-off man Eric O'Brien's first assist since 2012. After a trio of Charlotte goals, the half ended with the Hounds ahead, 5-4.

Machine defenseman Brian Farrell, the leading points-per-game long pole in Major League Lacrosse, tied the game with a goal just 39 seconds into the second half. O'Brien and Maltz each added goals of their own to give the Machine a 7-5 advantage. Charlotte responded with four goals in a row before Maltz added his third. Ohio attackman Logan Schuss tied the game at nine with a powerplay goal with 1:58 left in the quarter.

Charlotte scored 13 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Maltz managed to equalize with his fourth goal of his MLL debut. Schuss added his third of the night to give Ohio an 11-10 lead with 11:28 to play. After a goal for Ohio and a pair of scores for the Hounds, the game went to overtime tied at 12 before Schreiber's winner.

Maltz finished the day with four goals while schuss added three and Farrell had two. Baum and Schreiber each tallied three assists to lead the game.

Machine goalie Brian Phipps picked up the win after making 17 saves on 29 shots on goal. O'Brien went seven-for-13 on face offs while teammate Bobby Dattilo finished 10-for-16 at the midfield X.

Ward led the Hounds with three goals on the night while Young and Matt Danowski each had two.

Charlotte and the Machine came into the game tied for fifth in MLL with 4-6 records.

The game marked the Machine's second-ever overtime matchup and first overtime win. It was also the first-ever overtime MLL game at Selby Stadium.

The Machine will stay at home to play the Denver Outlaws on Saturday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. before heading back out on the road. That game will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network. Ohio will then head to Rochester to play the Rattlers Aug. 2 before finishing the regular season at Selby Stadium Aug. 9 against the Florida Launch.
