Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped a doubleheader to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Syracuse lost 4-2 in game one before a 5-0 defeat in game two.

In game one, Lehigh Valley (48-52) struck first in the fifth inning against right-hander Josh Roenicke. Leandro Castro led the inning off with a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 IronPigs lead. Cam Perkins then reached first base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Zach Walters. Sebastian Valle followed with an infield single, moving Perkins to third base. After a Brad Lincoln fly out, Nate Spears laid a bunt down for a single. Perkins scored on the play to extend the Lehigh Valley lead to two, and Valle moved to third on a throwing error by first baseman Greg Dobbs. Valle scored on a Tyler Henson sacrifice fly to right field to extend the IronPigs lead to three. Lehigh Valley concluded its fifth-inning scoring with a Maikel Franco double to the center-field wall that scored Spears from first for a 4-0 IronPigs lead.

Syracuse (59-41) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning off right-hander Brad Lincoln. Jhonatan Solano led off with an infield single. Will Rhymes then doubled to right field, and Solano advanced to third. Solano scored on a Josh Johnson pinch-hit sacrifice fly to left field. Lincoln then hit Emmanuel Burriss with a pitch to put runners on first and second for Jeff Kobernus. Kobernus singled to right field to score Rhymes and cut the IronPigs lead to two runs, 4-2.

Lincoln, however, would recover from there to fire scoreless sixth and seventh innings. He finished off a complete game by striking out Steven Souza, Jr. and Tyler Moore with two runners on.

In game two, Lehigh Valley struck first in the top of the first inning against right-hander Neil Holland. After a Clete Thomas pop out to start the game, shortstop Freddy Galvis doubled off the wall in center field. Franco grounded to a fielder's choice as Galvis was gunned down at third. Left fielder Darin Ruf doubled to right field, scoring Franco and putting the IronPigs on the board.

The IronPigs struck again in the top of the second inning against Holland. Castro singled to center field to lead off the inning. Spears followed by crushing a 2-0 pitch from Holland over the fence in right-center to give Lehigh Valley a 3-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley tacked onto the lead in the top of the third inning against left-hander Matt Grace. Galvis led off the inning with a single to right field and Franco followed suit with a single to left field. After a Ruf fly out, first baseman Jim Murphy followed with a single to right field to load the bases for Castro. The right fielder lined a single to center field to score Galvis and Franco and increase the IronPigs' lead to 5-0.

Right-hander Hector Neris and left-handers Jeremy Horst and Cesar Jimenez shut down the Syracuse offense in the game. The three combined to allow just four hits and two walks in seven innings.

The Chiefs return to action Sunday night for another doubleheader against the IronPigs at 5:00 p.m. Right-hander Mitch Lively and a pitcher to be announced will take the mound against left-hander Greg Smith and right-hander Jason Marquis.
