Crushers Fall to Florence 2-0

Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio-- The Lake Erie Crushers were shutout to open the second half of the season, falling to the Florence Freedom 2-0 Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (27-25) marked the sixth time they were held scoreless this season. It was also the fifth consecutive time that Lake Erie has begun a home series with a loss. The win for the Freedom (22-28) snapped their four game losing streak.
Florence used a two-run third inning to secure the victory in this one and rode the arm of RHP Casey Henn (4-4) who pitched 7.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Lake Erie starting pitcher Zach Gordon (0-2) retired the first batter in the third inning before allowing a single to leadoff man Cole Miles. Miles swiped his 13th base of the season three pitches later and advanced to third on a single by Ben Kline. The next batter Rob Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Miles and give the Freedom the 1-0 lead.
Florence added their second and final run just a few moments later when All Star Sam Eberle lined a single into right field. The throw home from Hutchison beat Kline to the plate, but Kline narrowly avoided the tag to score.
The Crushers would get a leadoff double from Juan Sanchez in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't capitalize. They would also get a runner to second base in the fourth and sixth innings but couldn't capitalize.
After Gordon pitched just 3.1 innings, the Crusher bullpen carried its first-half dominance over to tonight's game, allowing one hit in 5.2 innings of work. They kept the Crushers in the game all the way through, but Lake Erie just couldn't string hits together.
The Crushers lost any momentum they may have had in the eighth inning when Ryan Solberg gunned out Joey Burney at third base for the first out. Burney was trying to advance to third on a single by Craig Hertler after Burney led off the inning with a hit.
Henn recorded his fourth victory tonight pitching 7.1 shutout innings, scattering six hits and one walk. Jorge Marban picked up his eighth save of the year, getting Ryan Hutchison to bounce into a game ending double play.
The Crushers were led offensively by Hertler and Vincent Mejia who each had two hits. Juan Sanchez and Joey Burney had the other two Lake Erie hits, with Sanchez's double holding up as the only one that went for extra bases.
Lefty Matt Rein (0-4, 6.63) is scheduled to pitch for Lake Erie in game two tomorrow night, while the Freedom with counter with former Crusher Dave Middendorf (3-4, 4.23). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
