Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons rode a stellar start from newly acquired starter Angel Sanchez to a 7-1 winover the Mississippi Braves Friday in front of 6,452 fans at Regions Field.
The Barons erupted for five runs in the first inning thanks in part to a trio of Mississippi errors. Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Josh Richmond followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Mitchell from third base for the first run of the game. After a Christian Marrero single, Thompson and Marrero executed a double steal that led to Thompson scampering home on a throwing error by Matt Kennelly. Jeremy Farrell followed with an RBI single and went to second when right fielder David Rohm overran the ball. Martin Medina capped the scoring with an infield single that scored Chris Curley from second after a throwing error by shortstop Daniel Castro.
The lead grew to 7-0 in the third inning on a two-run single by Jared Mitchell, knocking M-Braves starter Williams Perez (3-6, 3.26) out of the game. Mitchell finished with three hits on the night going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
However, the story of the night was Sanchez (1-9, 6.42) who allowed four hits and struck out five over 6.0 scoreless innings in his first start with the Barons since being claimed off of waivers by the White Sox on July 2. Sanchez previouslypitched for the Southern League's Jacksonville Suns and Montgomery Biscuits this season before arriving in Birmingham.
Backupcatcher Martin Medina finished 3-for-4 on the night and is hitting .526 (10-for-19) in seven games with the Barons this season. Trayce Thompson and Dan Wagner finished with two hits apiece for the Barons who tallied 13 on the night.
With the win, the Barons improved 14-12 in the second half and 43-53 on the season while Mississippi fell to 15-13 in the second half and 54-43 on the year. The Barons will look to capture a series victory tomorrow night as RHP Chris Beck (4-8, 3.73) takes the hill against RHP Ryan Weber. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT.
