Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

EDENTON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs got a great pitching performance again, but were unable to muster enough offense to come away with the victory, falling 2-1 to the Edenton Steamers on Friday night at Historic Hicks Field.

The SwampDogs led off the scoring in the second inning against Steamers starter Manny Arciniega, when Kam Stewart (Frostburg State) led off with a single. He advanced to second when Brandon Metoyer (Menlo) would get hit by a pitch. Arciniega would load the bases with nobody out when he walked David LaFleur (LSU Eunice). A sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jason Blum (Southeast Missouri State) would bring home Stewart and make it 1-0 SwampDogs.

The score would stay put there until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Blake Headley would lead off with a double against Alex Mateo (Nova Southeastern). Orlando Olivera was up next and hit a shot to left centerfield which cleared the teal monster for a homerun, and the Steamers took a 2-0 lead.

The Dogs would mount a threat in the seventh inning when they would get a one-out base hit from Blum, then two batters later Lane Paul (Murray State College) would draw a walk to put the go-ahead runner on base for David Palenzuela (Miami Dade). Steamers manager Bryan Hill would remove reliever Alex Posey from the game, and bring in the lefty Alex Westrick to face the lefty Palenzuela. On one pitch, Westrick got Palenzuela to ground out to first and end the inning.

Again in the eighth inning, the SwampDogs would threaten to score, when Westrick walked Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) to lead off the inning. Bozarth would then steal second base, and when Sam Hall (Dixie State) would bloop a base hit down the right field line, Bozarth would get thrown out at the plate. After Stewart grounded out to first, advancing Hall to second, SwampDogs manager David Tufo decided to pinch run Alex Harris (Dayton) to get some extra speed. After Metoyer worked out a walk, Westrick was removed from the game in favor of Zach Eden. Eden would get LaFleur to fly out to centerfield to end the inning.

Josh Roeder came in to try to shut the door in the ninth inning for the Steamers. He would strike out Blum, then get Norm Donkin (Delaware) to ground out to third base for the first two outs. Roeder would coax Paul into a groundout to first base, and the ballgame was over, as Roeder notched save number nine on the season.

Mateo (0-1) would undeservedly get the loss for the SwampDogs, but went 7.0 innings allowing just the two runs on six hits, while not walking a batter and striking out one. Arciniega (4-2) would get the victory for the Steamers, he went 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking three and striking out three.

The SwampDogs will return home Saturday night to face the Wilmington Sharks at 7:05 pm on Visor Night presented by Cape Fear Orthopedic. For tickets and more information call 910-426-5900.
