Indians Take Standings Lead with 1-0 Win

July 18, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

COLUMBUS, OH -- Brandon Cumpton and Josh Wall combined for a three-hit shutout while Dean Anna lifted a game-winning sac fly in the top of the ninth to lead the Indianapolis Indians (54-46) to a 1-0 blanking of the Columbus Clippers (53-47) on Thursday night at Huntington Park.

Cumpton faced just three above the minimum 24 in his eight strong innings, allowing only two base hits and four walks with three strikeouts. The right-hander loaded the bases on his first three batters with two free passes and a single, before dialing in to retire 21 of the final 24 Clippers to earn his fifth win in six decisions.

The 108-pitch gem also gives Cumpton a quality outing in each of his eight Triple-A starts. He has allowed just one earned run over five starts and 36 innings on the road (0.25 ERA) for the Tribe.

Cumpton erased a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth to set the stage for Josh Wall, who whiffed two in a scoreless ninth to earn his first save with the Indians.

Chris McGuiness scored both the game and Indians' lone run by doubling to lead off the ninth, taking second on a sac bunt from Blake Davis and crossing home on Anna's sac fly.
