Modesto Nuts News Release

San Bernardino, CA. - An early defensive miscue opened the door for a big second inning in the Nuts 10-2 loss to the 66ers on Thursday night at San Manuel Stadium.

Devin Burke (L, 5-8) had limited the damage in the first after giving up two runs against the 66ers (10-17, 35-62). In the second, Burke had given up a double, but with two outs, induced a groundball to first baseman Dean Espy that ricocheted off his foot allowing the inning to continue. Burke then surrendered a RBI single to Dennis Raben. A wild pitch allowed Wade Hinkle to score and Chad Hinshaw capped the inning with a three-run homer.

Burke, in his start for the Nuts (8-19, 31-66), went five innings, allowed nine hits and nine runs, four earned, while striking out four and walking three.

The Nuts offense was silent against 66ers starter Tyler DeLoach (W, 9-4) who tossed five scoreless innings. The lefty struck out six and allowed just three singles.

Dave Bergin clubbed a solo home run for the Nuts in the sixth inning, his third in four games with Modesto. Pat Valaika ripped a triple and scored on Francisco Sosa's RBI groundout.

The Nuts will look to avoid the sweep in the finale of the three-game series against the 66ers on Friday night. Lefty Jayson Aquino will throw for the Nuts. Righty Ray Hanson will be on the mound for the 66ers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m.
