Knights Defeat RailRiders, 9-5

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The home run derby was played earlier this week in Durham. But the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox) played their first game out of the All-Star Break like it was still exhibition time. The Knights bombed six home runs off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) pitching. Four of those homers came against starter Bryan Mitchell (0-1), who had never allowed more than seven home runs in a season, much less four in a game. It all added up to a 9-5 loss for the RailRiders (46-52) who fell to 1-5 against the Knights (41-58).

The small confines of BB&T BallPark certainly played a role in the Knights' offensive parade. However, the RailRiders rallied from an 8-1 hole to send a go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh inning. They had the bases loaded with one out when Rob Refsnyder struck out against reliever Ryan Kussmaul. The RailRiders' leader in home runs and RBIs, Zoilo Almonte, followed with a fly-out to the wall in right-center and the RailRiders left them loaded.

Mitchell allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks over four-plus innings. His counterpart, Erik Johnson (3-6), faced one over the minimum through five but survived an ugly sixth to earn the win.

The four-game series continues on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. SWB right-hander Chris Leroux (2-2, 4.44) faces former RailRider and New York Yankee Chien-Ming Wang (8-5, 3.70). John Sadak will have the play-by-play call while Aaron Berlin anchors the pregame show at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio -The GAME, Northeast PA's largest radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
