Bristol Fires Back, Defeat Danville 3-2

July 17, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - Danville struggled all night against the Bristol Pirates, the last place team in the Appalachian League. Bristol dominated on the mound all night, much like the D-Braves did Wednesday night versus the Pirates. Starter Omar Basulto threw another great game and the Bristol bullpen would finish off the D-Braves for the 3-2 win.

Andrew Waszak got the start for Danville, and found himself in trouble in the early going. Waszak got the first two outs for the Braves in the first inning, but then allowed a double to right fielder Nick Buckner, scoring Jerrick Suiter. Danny Arribas singled Buckner home in the next at bat. Buckner was not done for the Pirates however, in the fifth inning he would single again to center notching his second RBI of the evening driving home Eduardo Figueroa for the final run of the game for Bristol.

Waszak finished the game going 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. Waszak struck out five on the night, and managed to show a lot of composure getting out of troublesome situations. Braves pitching stranded eight Pirates base runners on the evening.

Danville had plenty of opportunities in this one, but they just couldn't cash in when they needed to late. Fernelys Sanchez had a two out double in the seventh, but was thrown out at second after aggressively turning to third and diving back to second. Ten D-Braves were stranded on base by Pirates pitching as well, including two in the eighth inning as Omar Obregon reached on a single, and Jordan Edgerton reached on a throwing error by third baseman Edgardo Munoz with two outs. Alejandro Piloto would strike out to end the opportunity for Danville.

There was some late, short-lived excitement for the Danville faithful though. The bottom of the ninth started with three straight walks by Bristol's John Sever to load the bases with no outs. However, consecutive strikeouts by Fernelys Sanchez and Justin Black would make it an uphill climb if it wasn't already, leaving the bases loaded and the D-Braves down to their final out. Omar Obregon slapped a shot to Bristol shortstop Trae Arbet who just could not handle it, allowing Luis Monasterio and Bryan De La Rosa to score making it 3-2. Bristol would replace Sever with Jess Amedee to face the big bat of the Danville lineup Jordan Edgerton. However, Edgerton would pop out to second, stranding Obregon on first, and Joe Daris at second to end the game.

The Danville Braves (15-11) will be back in action tomorrow night in the rubber match of the series against the Bristol Pirates (8-16), as Daniel Cordero(1-3, 6.46 ERA) looks to take the mound squaring off against Bristol's Mervin Del Rosario (1-1, 4.40 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
