Stone's Eight Shutout Innings Drop Raptors

July 17, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Ogden Raptors News Release

Great Falls Voyagers starting pitcher Dane Stone lowered his league-leading earned run average to 1.21 with eight shutout innings in a 9-0 win over the Ogden Raptors Wednesday night at Lindquist Field.

Stone (3-0) allowed just three hits, two singles from Devan Ahart and a double from Julian Leon, and a walk in his third win of the year. The right-hander struck out six.

Raptors starter Bernardo Reyes pitched well but lost his fifth straight start. Reyes (0-5) gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings with five strikeouts.

The Voyagers (18-11) got on the board first in the fourth inning. With two outs, Zach Fisher doubled and came home two batters later on an RBI single by Zach Stoner.

Great Falls got another run in the fifth when Chevy Clarke hit a solo homer, his fifth of the season, to give the Voyagers a 2-0 lead.

After another run scored on an error in the seventh, the Voyagers broke the game open with three runs in the eighth inning. Jake Peter singled to center field to start the inning. Fisher then hit a grounder to first. Raptors (10-19) first baseman Brian Wolfe threw too wide to second to force out Peter, and shortstop Cristian Gomez's throw was too low for Wolfe to handle. Peter scored one the error and Fisher ended up on second base.

John Ziznewski then hit an infield single to short, but Gomez's throw was errant again, putting Fisher on third. Once Stone walked to load the bases, Mason Robbins hit a two run single to right to put Great Falls ahead 6-0.

The Voyagers tacked on three more in the ninth inning when Ethan Gross and Peter walked to start the inning. Fisher then hit a three-run home run, his second of the season, to end the scoring with the Voyagers ahead 9-0.

Two players made the Raptors debut Wednesday night. Right-handed pitcher Karch Kowalczyk pitched the ninth inning, relieving Edinson Bock after Fisher's home run. The 37th-round pick walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning.

Also, Billy Bereszniewicz pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth inning. The 28th-round pick struck out swinging for the second out of the frame.

The three Ogden hits tied a season low. The Raptors only had three hits in the three-hit shutout from Billings' Tyler Mahle on July 13.

Thursday's loss eliminated Ogden from first-half contention. The Raptors are 10 games behind first-place Orem with nine games remaining in the first half.

The Raptors and Voyagers continue their three-game series Thursday. Right-hander Jeff Brigham (0-1, 1.80 ERA) will pitch for Ogden against lefty Brian Clark (2-0, 1.38 ERA). Brigham allowed just a leadoff homer to Clarke and received a loss against Great Falls in his last start on July 11. Clark is making his first professional start after putting up good numbers in six relief appearances.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 97.5 The Zone. Three-dollar general admission fan passes are available for Thursday's game wherever Pepsi is sold.
