The Suns opened the scoring with a pair in the first, but the Power immediately answered with two on a double by Jeff Roy in the second inning. Hagerstown recaptured the lead with a run in the home half of the second off Justin Topa. The Suns added three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to build an 8-2 edge. West Virginia plated one run on a sac fly by Danny Collins in the eighth and closed the scoring with a Michael Fransoso solo home run in the ninth. Topa took the loss while Brett Mooneyham notched the victory. Austin Meadows had three singles in the Power defeat.
JONESING FOR MORE: JaCoby Jones extended his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games with a third inning single on Tuesday. The shortstop's streak is the third longest by a Power player this season and is the second longest current streak in the league, trailing only injured teammate Harold Ramirez (23 straight). Jones has a .458 average during the streak and has raised his season average from .258 to a team-best .296.
BURNT BY THE SUNS: West Virginia trails the all-time series with Hagerstown 70-58. Prior to last night, the Power had not played at Municipal Stadium since the South Atlantic League Northern Division Championship Series last September and are 25-39 there during the regular season since 2005. This three-game series marks the only trip to Hagerstown this year. The Suns return to Charleston for three games in early August.
DICKSON DEALING: Prior to the South Atlantic League All-Star break, Cody Dickson was 2-8 with a 5.58 ERA over 13 starts spanning 59 and two-thirds innings. Since the break, the southpaw is 2-0 with a 1.98 earned run average over five starts covering 27 and-a-third innings pitched.
BORDEN HONORED: Right-hander Buddy Borden was named as the South Atlantic League's Pitcher-of-the-Week for his efforts from July 7 through 13. The starter went 2-0 with a spotless 0.00 ERA over two starts spanning 11 and two-thirds innings. It is the second straight week that a Power player has been honored by the league following JaCoby Jones Player-of-the-Week award for June 30- July 6.
BELL TO BOOST CURVE? Media reports have suggested that the Pirates will promote Josh Bell to Altoona after the Eastern League All-Star break. The outfielder has appeared in 84 games for Bradenton this season and has hit .335 with nine home runs and 53 runs batted in. The 2013 SAL All-Star was a starter in the 2014 Florida State League All-Star Game as well.
