Long Crazy Night Ends in a RailCats Win 7-6

GARY, IN- It was a crazy night at US Steel Yard. There was 5 minute late start due to weather. Then the Fargo Moorhead pitching coach Freddy Flores was ejected from the game. The RailCats took a lead then the rains came for 45 minutes only see the Fargo tie the game following the delay to break up three hitless innings. The Cats got the lead again and then had starter Stephen Hiscock tossed as well as manager Greg Tagert as the RailCat added to their lead to make it 7-4. Fargo made a late run and left the tying and go ahead runners on base but when the dust settled the Gary South Shore RailCats had taken game two of the series 7-6 over the Fargo-Moorhead Red Hawks.

It all began with Flores getting tossed by plate umpire Dwight Child after Danny Pulfer walked in the home half of the first. The RailCats did not take advantage of the walk waiting a bit longer to get on the board. The RailCats picked up two runs in the third when Drew Muren tripled to start the inning off of Fargo starter Taylor Stanton. Danny Pulfer then drove Muren home to make it 1-0 with an RBI single. Drew Martinez and Zac Mitchell both reached on singles to load the bases. Ryan Babineau then brought home a run on a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0.

Stephen Hiscock retired the first two batters of the fourth before the skies opened up and the field was covered. Following a 45 minute delay both starters returned with Hiscock allowing his first hit a double to Erik Castro. The next batter Petey Paramore hit a deep ball way out in right to tie the game at two.

The South Shore then took the lead in the fifth and added another in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. In the seventh after a leadoff double Hiscock retired the next two. He looked to retire Ronnie Bourquin in the inning on a check swing but the batter stayed alive on appeal. Then a pitch later Hiscock just missed inside which set the righty off and he was ejected from the game along with skipper Greg Tagert. Kagen Hopkins came in and gave up a single to make it 4-3 RailCats. The RailCats came back with three in the bottom of the seventh as Craig Maddox and Ryan Babineau each walked back to back off of reliever Eric Draxton. With one out Josh Romanski tripled to score both runners to make it 6-3. A passed ball on Travis Higgs brought home another run and it was 7-3.

Yet, the Red Hawks would not go away. In the top of the ninth facing James Parr and trailing 7-4 the Red Hawks Brandon Tripp struck out for out number one but Zach Penprase would walk. The Parr got Travis Higgs to strike out for out number two. Ronnie Bourquin the hit a two out double to score Penprase and it was 7-5 Cats. The Red Hawks got another run on a Sawyer Carroll RBI single and it was 7-6 with the tying and winning runs on. Parr then got Nic Jackson to fly to center and the RailCats climbed to 34-23 and 11 games above .500.

Hiscock tossed a quality start getting the win (7-4) while Stanton (2-7) picked up the loss and Parr earning the save his 4th. The two teams will wrap up the series Wednesday at 12:10pm with RHP Stephen Bougher (4-3, 4.84) going for the South Shore with RHP Curtis Camilli (1-1, 0.66) going for Fargo-Moorhead.
