Missions Hold off 'Riders to Snap Skid

San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio snapped their season-long, seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over Frisco Tuesday afternoon in front of 4,217 at Wolff Stadium.

The contest got off to a slow start offensively, with San Antonio's James Needy and Frisco's Alex Claudio matching zeroes through the first three innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Missions took advantage of a throwing error by Guilder Rodriguez to plate three unearned runs off Claudio (1-2). Cody Overbeck drove in the first run with an RBI ground out. Lee Orr made it 2-0 when he followed with an RBI single to center. Orr would eventually cap the inning when he scored from third as part of a double steal.

Rodriguez atoned for his defensive miscue in the fifth when he drove in the first of two Frisco runs with his first triple of the season.

San Antonio had a chance to break the game open in the sixth when they loaded the bases with nobody out against reliever Francisco Mendoza. However, the Missions settled for just a Brian Bixler run-producing double play grounder that made the score 4-2.

Bixler gave San Antonio a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth with a clutch, two-out, RBI triple to right off former Missions' reliever Erik Hamren.

Frisco made things interesting in the top of the ninth, slicing the Missions' lead to just one on Chris Grayson's two-run single to left center off reliever Trevor Gott. After Gott walked next batter Jake Skole, San Antonio manager Rich Dauer opted to bring in lefty Jeff Ibarra to face Rodriguez. The move paid off as Ibarra (2nd save) induced Rodriguez to bang into a game-ending double play.

Ibarra preserved the win for Needy (7-3), who allowed just two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three over six innings. Needy has now won a career-high seven straight decisions, during which he's pitched to a 1.98 ERA (17 ER/77.1 IP).

San Antonio (48-47, 12-13) and Frisco (53-40, 13-11) wrap up their four-game series Wednesday, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Bryce Morrow (1-2, 1.38) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with fellow righty Alec Asher (7-8, 3.91).
