Corpus Christi Breaks Hounds Win Streak

July 14, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Legend has it that a full moon causes strange things to occur. Sunday's game included a seven-run Hooks third inning ... five home runs hit, but only three that "counted" ... a fan rushing onto the field ... warnings issued to both teams (with one questionable ejection) ... and one fielder making both one of the best, and worst, plays of the year. After the (moon) dust settled, the RockHounds' nine-game win streak was over.

Full Moon, Part 1 - The turning point in the game (and this was the "take" from Corpus Christi Radio Voice Michael Coffin, as well) came before a run was scored. In the top of the third, with two on and one out, Hiro Nakajima hit a drive to deep left-center, clearing the four-foot high home bullpen fence. Hooks center fielder Delino DeShields, Jr. made a brilliant, running catch, leaving his feet and crashing, hip-high, into the bullpen fence. DeShields, Jr. reached over the fence, snagged the ball, taking a three-run home run away from Nakajima.

Full Moon, Part 2 - With the Hooks leading, 4-0, in the third, catcher Beau Taylor made a terrific play on a pop foul off the bat of Telvin Nash behind home plate. Umpire Lee Meyers, however, ruled the ball had brushed the net, and the play was dead. Two pitches later, Nash hit a three-run home run, the key swing in the Hooks' seven-run third inning.

Full Moon, Part 3 - When Nash next came to the plate (leading off the fifth), Blake Hassebrock hit him with a pitch up and in. The Hooks didn't have any (apparent) issue with the pitch, but a fan did. The man, who had been bellowing from the first row an inning earlier, ran on to the field, confronting Hassebrock. The RockHounds, initially without any help from security or the Hooks, kept the individual (read that as "idiot") at bay until he was escorted off. Corpus Christi (and former RockHounds) hitting coach Tim Garland did a terrific job in ushering the man away.

Full Moon, Part 4 - When Hassebrock hit Tony Kemp (in the foot or ankle, with the bases loaded), a warning was issued to both benches. In the eighth, when a 1-2 pitch (a change-up, no less) was high and tight to the 'Hounds' Max Muncy, Hooks pitcher Colton Cain was ejected, although there was (clearly) no intent. Hooks manager Keith Bodie, who, by rule, should have been ejected immediately with Cain, was instead "tossed" only after a lengthy (and understandable) argument.

Full Moon, Part 5 - The RockHounds' only run scored when DeShields, Jr. (the same outfielder who absolutely robbed Hiro Nakajima of the three-run home run earlier) lost Billy Burns' two-out fly ball to center in the seventh. The ball fell, untouched, 15 feet to his left.

Full Moon, Part 6 - Corpus Christi's M.P. Cokinos hit a fly ball to left in the fifth, with the initial call being a three-run home run. The ball appeared to be clearly foul and, after a discussion, the umpiring crew reversed the ruling. The change was warranted, but befitting of the night.
