Memphis Redbirds News Release
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Memphis lost traction late in the game and dropped the rubber match of the series against New Orleans by a 6-2 score on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.
The Redbirds gave up at least a run in each of the final four innings, spoiling a strong start from starter John Gast. The left-hander gave up two runs off of two solo homers, very similar to Zach Petrick's outing on Saturday night. Gast struck out two and walked one in his six innings of work, taking a no-decision on the afternoon.
After Gast exited at the conclusion of the sixth, Memphis finally found their way on the scoreboard in the seventh. Tommy Pham started the frame with his second of three hits and gave way to Xavier Scruggs two batters later. The first baseman stepped in and tied the game up at 2-2, pounding the ball over the centerfield wall for his ninth longball of the season. The shot gave the 'Birds new life, but the game did not remain tied very long.
Recently-added PCL All-Star Angel Castro entered in relief and was roughed up with four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Only two of the runs were earned, but the damage could not be undone and the right-hander suffered the loss.
On a day when Memphis recorded only seven hits, catcher Ed Easley (0-4) saw his season-best eleven-game hitting streak come to a close. On the other side, three of New Orleans' nine hits went for home runs, the deciding factor in the game.
The All-Star Break will take place from Monday, July 14 to Wednesday, July 16. Castro will join outfielder Stephen Piscotty as representatives for the game in Durham, North Carolina at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Memphis will resume play on Thursday, July 17 when they open up a series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A Rockies) at AutoZone Park. Left-hander Tim Cooney (9-5, 3.74) will make the start for the Redbirds.
