Zephyrs Go into All-Star Break on Winning Note

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Jake Marisnick broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run double, lifting the New Orleans Zephyrs past the Memphis Redbirds, 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.

New Orleans took two out of three games from its division rival in the final series before the All-Star break.

An error by Redbirds shortstop Pete Kozma on a line drive by Alfredo Silverio leading off the seventh opened the door for the Zephyrs' winning rally. Kyle Skipworth drew a one-out walk from Angel Castro, and after an Adam Conley sacrifice bunt, Marsinick looped a double down the right field line to score both runners.

The game shaped up as a pitchers duel between John Gast and Brad Penny early on. Both starters allowed one hit and faced the minimum through three innings, and each needed just 52 pitches to sail through four scoreless innings before the Redbirds threatened against Penny in the fifth.

With two outs, Kozma singled to right and Jermaine Curtis worked a walk. A passed ball by Skipworth advanced both runners into scoring position, but Penny picked up his sixth strikeout by fanning opposing starter John Gast to end the inning.

The Zephyrs broke through in the bottom of the frame when Skipworth jumped on a first-pitch fastball from Gast and drove it deep over the right field wall for his 10th home run of the season, and third during a six-game hitting streak.

An inning later, Mark Canha connected for a towering drive off the left field pole, his 13th homer of the year. Canha collected three hits in the game and has hit safely in 20 of his last 22 contests, batting .402 in that span.

Memphis answered in the top of the seventh against Conley, who was making the fourth relief appearance of his career. Tommy Pham led off with a single, and one out later, Xavier Scruggs ripped a two-run homer to left-center field to briefly tie the score at 2-2.

After the Z's retook the lead on Marisnick's double, they tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on the first Triple-A home run by Alfredo Silverio. New Orleans goes into the All-Star break with 105 home runs, the third-highest total in the league.

Conley (3-4) settled down to hold Memphis scoreless over the final two innings and earn the win in relief of Penny, who pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts in his first Zephyrs start since signing a contract with the Marlins last month.

Castro (7-6) was charged with four runs in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.

The Z's come out of the All-Star break with a four-game series in Omaha beginning Thursday. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network at 8:00 p.m.
