Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

COLUMBIA, SC - Alex Mateo (Nova Southeastern) made his first start of the season for the SwampDogs after arriving on Thursday, and he spun a gem against the Columbia Blowfish Saturday night, as the SwampDogs won their fourth contest in their last five, 3-2 in 12 innings.

Things didn't get off to a great start for Mateo, as he walked leadoff batter J.D. Crowe then threw a wild pitch to advance Crowe to second, and then balked to send Crowe to third. An Allen Staton groundout to second baseman Kam Stewart (Frostburg State) brought home Crowe and the Blowfish led 1-0.

That is where the score would stay until the top of the fifth inning, when Michael Bozarth (Saint Louis) led off with a base hit off of Blowfish starter Michael Carpin, then stole second base. Two batters later, Lane Paul (Murray State College) laced an RBI single into right field to plate Bozarth and even up the score.

The Dogs would take the lead in the sixth inning against reliever Trevor Hutto after a one out single from Stewart was followed up by Alex Harris (Dayton) reaching on an error by Staton. With runners on first and second and one out, Jacob Whiting (Montevallo) hit a groundball to the first baseman Nick Pappas. Pappas threw to second base to retire Harris, but shortstop Sean Miller's return throw to first sailed high and Stewart came in to score and make it 2-1 SwampDogs.

Mateo cruised through his seven-inning outing, allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out three. The hit came in the fourth inning when Staton hit a chopper to the shortstop Blum, who tried to play the high chopper on the backhand, and had it skip off the top of his glove. The scorer awarded Staton a hit on the play.

Cam Knott (Mercyhurst) came in to relieve Mateo, and gave up a hard-hit double to Eric Barber and a long fly out to Matt Williams and was removed in favor of Bennett Schiltz (Midland) who got Miller out for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch with Crowe at the plate allowed Barber to come in and score the tying run.

The two teams would remain scoreless through the ninth, 10th and 11th innings, despite the SwampDogs mounting threats in the 10th and 11th innings.

In the 12th inning, Palenzuela lead off with a triple against Evan Raynor. After Norm Donkin (Delaware) and Sam Hall (Dixie State) struck out, Stewart came through with a single to bring in Palenzuela and make it 3-2 Dogs.

Schiltz was still on the mound in the 12th for the SwampDogs and shut the door on the Blowfish, helped out by the fourth double play turned by the Dogs on the night.

Schiltz (3-2) earned his second win of the week, while Evan Raynor (0-2) took the loss.

The SwampDogs will break for the CPL All-Star Game in Morehead City on Sunday and Monday, before hitting the road on Tuesday to take on the Peninsula Pilots.
