Salem Red Sox Game Notes

July 12, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

The Sox and Rocks play game two of the weekend form game set tonight at Frawley Stadium.

Stymied on the Rocks: Glenn Sparkman and Corey Littrell were both outstanding in yesterday's pitcher's duel, but it was Sparkman who got the best of the battle in the Rocks 2-0 win. The Sox have now dropped five straight games. The Sox are in jeopardy of their third six game skid of the season with a loss tonight. Salem is now six games under .500, a season low watermark they also achieved on June 24.

No Southern Hospitality Up North: The Salem Red Sox have struggled on the road against North division opponents in 2014. The Sox are now just 4-18 on the road against the Carolina League North (Frederick, Lynchburg, Potomac, Wilmington). Furthermore, in the second half, Salem is just 1-5 at those four opponents. Conversely, the Sox haven't exactly been the most welcoming hosts to their Northern counterparts. Salem is 16-8 against the North at LewisGale Field, with a winning record against three of the four teams (see page three). Salem is 5-1 at home against Wilmington, and just 1-3 at Frawley Stadium.

Welcome to the Carolina League: The task seemed significant for Kendrick Perkins in his first Carolina League game, facing Orioles #1 prospect Dylan Bundy. But Perkins shined in his first game in the circuit. Perkins went 2-3, with a walk, scored and drove in a run Thursday night. Perkins was called up from Greenville before yester- day's game. The outfielder hit .296 in 51 games with Greenville, with six home runs and 26 RBIs.

An Epic Stretch: On a night where the Red Sox mustered just four hits, Jordan Weems continued his offensive onslaught. With a 3-3 performance last night, Jordan Weems is now eight for his last ten over a three game stretch. Amazingly, Weems was zero for his pervi- ous eight entering the stretch. Weems has an a lone RBI and run scored in his last ten at-bats, a ridiculous .800 clip.

I'm Coming Home: It may not be the most high-profile homecoming in the Sports world this week, but Joe Gunkel is slated to pitch in front of some hometown fans tonight in Wilmington. Gunkel grew up in Pennsylvania and went to school at West Chester University, just 17 miles North of Frawley Stadium. Gunkel was off to a great start with the Salem Sox before getting roughed up a bit his last time out. Through his first two Carolina League starts, Gunkel was 1-0 with a 2.38ERA(3ER/11.1IP).Butinhislasttwooutings,Gunkelis0-2with a 8.00 ERA (8 ER/9.1 IP). Gunkel was roughed up to the tune of 10 hits and nine runs (six earned) against Frederick on July 7th. Gunkel began his professional and spent much of this season in Greenville out of the bullpen. Tonight marks Gunkel's tenth career professional start.

Other Notable Nuggets: Mike Miller snapped a nine game hit streak last night. Jantzen Witte snapped a seven game hit streak.

Last night's shutout win gives the Blue Rocks the league lead in shutout wins. Wilmington is 9-3 in shutouts, while Salem is now 8-4.
