Zephyrs Strike Early to Clip Redbirds

July 11, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Jake Marisnick opened the New Orleans Zephyrs' final homestand before the All-Star Break with a lead off home run to spark the Z's to a 6-4 victory Friday over the Memphis Redbirds at Zephyr Field.

The blast was the Zephyrs' 100th of the season, fourth-most in the PCL, and they moved into a tie with the Round Rock Express for second place in the division, 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Nashville Sounds.

The Zephyrs also plated three in the second inning with four hits, including a wild pitch by Redbirds starter Marco Gonzales (0-1) on a strikeout of Jordany Valdespin that allowed him to reach base and Danny Black to score the Z's third run of the game. Mark Canha followed with a single to drive in Marisnick and give New Orleans a 4-0 lead.

Memphis cut the lead in half in the third inning with two solo home runs, the first by Gonzales to lead off the inning and the other off the bat of Scott Moore with two outs.

Zephyrs starter Alex Sanabia (4-3) did not allow another hit until the sixth inning, which Moore led off with the second of his three hits on the night. He moved to third on a double by Stephen Piscotty and scored on a ground out by Tommy Pham.

Sanabia exited the game with a 5-3 lead, as the Z's scored in the fifth when Jensen's leadoff single turned into a run as he crossed the plate when Josh Rodriguez grounded into a double play.

Donnie Joseph came in to pitch two innings after Sanabia gave up three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his six innings of work. The only hit Joseph allowed was Moore's second home run of the game in the eighth.

The Redbirds got runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth, but Arquimedes Caminero struck out Randal Grichuk to complete his third save in as many nights and his fourth of the season.

Marisnick finished 2-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Canha went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Juan Diaz had a perfect 4-for-4 night with four singles in the Z's 10-hit attack.

The Zephyrs and Redbirds will play the second game of their three-game series at 6 p.m. Saturday at Zephyr Field. Andrew Heaney (3-0, 2.74 ERA) is scheduled to start for New Orleans against Zach Petrick (4-4, 5.06 ERA) for Memphis
