Squirrels Hit Baysox Bullpen in Win

Bowie, Md. - The Richmond Flying Squirrels snagged their first lead of the game with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 5-3 in a win over the Baysox Friday night. The Baysox were unable to take advantage of five Richmond errors in the loss, hitting just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Baysox got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning against Richmond starter Ty Blach. Ronald Bermudez hit a lead off double to center field, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Niuman Romero and scored on a two-out Dariel Alvarez single to center field to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.

Bowie added another run in the bottom of the second inning. Garabez Rosa hit a two-out double to right field and Bermudez followed with a double to center field that plated Rosa and gave the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

Richmond got one run back in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. With two outs and runner on second base, Skyler Stromsmoe singled to left field to bring home a run and make the score 2-1.

The Flying Squirrels tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Devin Harris hit a lead off double to center field and Julio DePaula then replaced Berry on the mound. With one out, Ryan Lollis reached on a fielding error by Rosa that allowed Harris to move to third base where he scored on a Stromsmoe single to center field to tie the game 2-2.

The Baysox retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning against Richmond reliever Edwin Quirarte. With one out, Romero reached on a throwing error by Stromsmoe and Christian Walker followed with a walk. With two outs, Kang reached on a force out attempt and throwing error by shortstop Kelby Tomlinson that allowed Romero to score and give Bowie a 3-2 lead.

Richmond took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Tomlinson hit a lead off single to right field and Mario Lisson followed with a single to right field that moved Tomlinson to second base. Both runners scored on a Jarrett Parker double to center field and with one out, Ricky Oropesa singled to shortstop to move Parker to third. Lollis brought Parker home on a groundout to first base to extend the Flying Squirrels lead to 5-3.

Berry pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out six and walking two in the no decision. DePaula pitched two innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two in the loss. Reliever Ashur Tolliver pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Quirarte picked up the win for Richmond, pitching one inning in relief and allowing one unearned run while walking one and striking out one.

RHP Zach Davies (4-5, 4.06) takes the mound for the Baysox Saturday as the Baysox play the second game in a four-game home series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by LHP Jack Snodgrass (8-2, 3.39).

The Baysox are home through Monday, July 14 for a four game homestand against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Promotional highlights include Women in Sports Night Saturday, July 12 at 6:35 p.m. and the Football Kickoff Party Sunday, July 13 at 6:05 p.m.
