Salem Red Sox Game Notes

July 11, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

The Salem Red Sox look to snap a four game losing streak tonight against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. First pitch is at 7:05.

Welcome to the Carolina League: The task seemed significant for Kendrick Perkins in his first Carolina League game, facing Orioles #1 prospect Dylan Bundy. But Perkins shined in his first game in the circuit. Perkins went 2-3, with a walk, scored and drove in a run. Per- kins was called up from Greenville before yesterday's game. The outfielder hit .296 in 51 games with Greenville, with six home runs and 26 RBIs.

Reversal of Fortunes: In the month of June, the Sox were dominant at home and struggled on the road. Through ten days of July, that trend has completely reversed. After last night's loss, the Sox have as more home losses in July than they did in all of June (4 to 3). And the Sox 3-2 road record in the month gives them more road wins in July then Salem achieved in all of June. The Sox had lost 21 of 27 and 11 of 13 on the road entering July. Conversely the Sox had taken 22 of 34 and 10 of 13 at home entering this home stand. The Sox were swept at home last night for the first time since April. And the Sox winning road trip from July 1st through 6th was its first winning trip since mid-May.

Breaking a Trend: Despite outstanding starts from Justin Haley and Pat Light the last two nights, the Sox did not taste victory in either affair. That marks back to back games in which the Sox lost when their starter went six innings. Salem had won its previous six con- tests when their starter went six innings, dating back to June 23rd. Salem is now 25-11 when their starter goes six or more. Conversely, the Sox are just 17-36 when their starter goes less than six innings, including dropping seven of the last nine games when the starter is done before hitting six innings.

It's Still Miller Time: It came down to his final at-bat, but Mike Miller managed to extend his hit streak to nine games with a single to left- center in the eight inning Wednesday night. Miller holds a .531 aver- age over that stretch (17/32), including eight runs scored. Mike has now reached base in 16 of the 18 games he's played in the second half. Remarkably, Miller is now up to .344 for the season in 31 games with the Salem Red Sox since his promotion June 1st.

Other Notable Nuggets: Jantzen Witte has hit in seven straight games and ten of eleven overall. He holds a .333 average in his last eleven (14/42).

With Christian Vazquez's promotion to Boston Thursday, he became the 29th player to play for Salem and make it to the show since the Red Sox affiliation began in 2009. He is the eight player to make his major league debut who was on Salem's 2012 or 2013 roster.

Corey Littrell has been outstanding his last three outings. Littrell is 2 -0 with a 2.25 ERA (5 ER/20 IP), lasting at least six innings in each start. Littrell has gone a career high seven innings his last two times out.
