 Washington Wild Things

Lake Erie Wins Series Finale 5-2

July 10, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, jumped out to an early lead Thursday night, but were unable to hold on as they fell by a final score of 5-2 to the visiting Lake Erie Crushers. Reliever Trevor Longfellow picked up the win for Lake Erie while Alex Kaminsky suffered the loss.

Washington took the lead in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the second inning. Designated hitter Maxx Garret and catcher Jim Vahalik each belted a solo home run to give the Wild Things a 2-0 lead. The two dingers proved to be the only runs plated for Washington on the night, however.

On the defensive side, Kaminsky breezed through the Lake Erie offense through the first four innings, retiring 11-straight batters before giving up his perfect game nod with two outs in the top of the fourth.

The Crushers dented Kaminsky's armor in the top of the sixth when they tied and eventually overtook Washington thanks to run-scoring hits from center fielder Craig Hertler and first baseman Emmanuel Quiles. A solo home run from designated hitter Andrew Davis later in the inning gave the Crushers a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Davis paced Lake Erie at the plate, going 3-4 and only being a triple shy of the cycle.

The Lake Erie lead was increased to 5-2 in the top of the eighth inning when Davis punched a two-run double into the outfield grass. The deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the Wild Things, giving the game and series to the Crushers.
