Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Matt Shortall went 3-for-4 with three separate RBI hits as the Williamsport Crosscutters scored five runs on seven hits over the first two inning for an early 5-0 lead and held on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-5 in the first of a three-game New York-Penn League series at Bowman Field on Wednesday night.
The Crosscutters jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three hits in the first inning off Vermont starter Cristhian Perez. After Perez kept a leadoff triple at third with a strikeout and groundout, a Derek Campbell walk and Shortall line drive RBI single gave Williamsport a 1-0 lead. Perez then balked home Campbell and Shortall scored on a Rhys Hoskins RBI double. The Crosscutters added two more runs in the second on four hits, including a two-out Aaron Brown two-run single for the 5-0 advantage.
Vermont got a run back in the third on a Jose Brizuela leadoff double and Brett Vertigan RBI double, but Perez allowed his sixth run of the night in the fifth on another Shortall RBI single. Yairo Munoz led off the top of the sixth with his first home run of the season and the Lake Monsters later added runs on a John Nogowski RBI fielder's choice and a run-scoring error by Williamsport reliever Bryan Sova on a failed pickoff attempt to cut the deficit to 6-4.
After Munoz was cut down at the plate trying to score from first base in the seventh inning on Vertigan's second double of the game, Dayton Alexander doubled home Vertigan to cut the Crosscutters lead to 6-5, but Williamsport got the run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Shortall RBI double off Vermont reliever Corey Walter. Crosscutter Frank Rivas retired all six lake Monsters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings for his second save of the year.
David Whitehead (2-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for Williamsport (15-11), while Jiandido Tromp was 3-for-5 with two runs and one of the Crosscutters five doubles on the night. Vertigan was 2-for-4 with the two doubles, the first Lake Monster with a two-double game this season, while Munoz and Alexander both had two hits. Perez (1-1) allowed six runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Vermont (10-16), which has now lost seven of their last eight road games, will play the second of the three-game series at Williamsport on Thursday. After the series finale on Friday, the Lake Monsters head to Jamestown for a three-game series before returning home to Centennial Field on July 16th.
