Revs Wait Out The Rain, Break Out Offensively In 11-5 Win

July 9, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution outslugged the Somerset Patriots 11-5 on Tuesday night in front of 4,979 fans at Santander Stadium, improving to 2-0 in the season's second half. The Revs improve to 43-29 overall for the season, matching a season-high at 14 games over the .500 mark, and will go for a series sweep on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Justin Greene had the biggest performance on an overall impressive night for the offense, going 3-for-5 with a triple, double, four RBI, and three runs scored, raising his league-best batting average to .380 on the season.

Somerset scored the game's first run on a first inning RBI double off the fence in left-center by Corey Smith, but the Revs answered back right away.

For the ninth time in the last 10 home games, the Revs scored a first inning run, and scored two runs for the eighth time in those nine. Greene ignited things with a single off the wall in left field before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson Valdez. Johan Limonta then nailed an RBI triple to deep left-center, and scored on a sac fly to left by Chad Tracy for the 2-1 advantage.

Revs starter Scott Gorgen withstood a rain delay of an hour and 32 minutes in the top of the second to remain in the game, and was an out away from escaping the third inning unscathed before Ty Wright tied the game with an RBI triple off the wall in right and Smith tagged a line drive two-run homer to left, giving the Patriots a 4-2 lead.

Somerset used reliever Daniel Herrera on the mound before the rain delay, saving scheduled starter Matt Zielinski for a longer role. Zielinski opened his night with a scoreless second and third inning, but was torched for six runs in the fourth, even though all were unearned.

After an error to set the table, Travis Garcia belted an RBI ground rule double to right-center for the first run of the inning. Jason Repko reached on a walk and Salvador Paniagua came up with an infield hit to load the bases, before Sean Smith picked up an RBI on a ground ball to third that resulted in an error. Greene then provided the big hit of the inning with a bases clearing three-run triple to right-center, and Valdez added a sac fly to deep left, giving the Revs an 8-4 lead. Tracy added a towering home run to left in the fifth, his tenth of the year, increasing the lead to 9-4.

Adam Donachie got one back for the Patriots in the sixth on an RBI groundout, but the Revs had the final word in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Greene and an infield single by Limonta that produced the game's final run.

Beau Vaughan (4-2) earned the win in relief for the Revs, allowing just one run in four innings, tying a season-high for innings by a Revs reliever.

Mark Hendrickson and Stephen Penney followed up with scoreless innings out of the bullpen to close it out.

Zielinski (7-3) took the loss, charged with nine runs (three earned) in five innings. The lefty is now 0-3 against York and 7-0 against the rest of the league.

The Revs improve to 6-3 against Somerset with the win.

York's Alain Quijano (7-4, 3.49) will face Somerset's Gary Moran (6-3, 4.97) in the series finale on Wednesday during Community Courier Night. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
