Barons Rally Falls Short in 7-3 Loss to Smokies

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped their series finale against the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 7-3 in front of 7,046 fans at Regions Field.
The Smokies jumped ahead with three runs in the second inning against starter Scott Snodgress (5-7, 4.21). Dustin Geiger started the scoring with an RBI double to left field and scored along with Taylor Davis on a double by Elliot Soto.
The Barons got on the board in the third inning on an RBI groundout from Kevan Smith but the Smokies answered right back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Jae-Hoon Ha to take a 4-1 lead. All four runs were credited to Snodgress who allowed five hits over 5.0 IP.
The Barons finally showed signs of life in the late innings, starting with an opposite field solo home run by Jared Mitchell in the seventh inning. The home run was Mitchell's fifth since joining the Barons on June 16th.
Rangel Ravelo waited four at-bats but was able to extend his hitting streak to a Southern League-best 25 games with an opposite field single to lead off theeighth inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a deep flyout by Kevan Smith and scored on a groundout by Chris Curley, cutting the Smokies lead to 4-3.
However, the comeback would fall short as the Smokies put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth, loading the bases against reliever Cody Winiarski.With Luis Flores at the plate, Winiarski ran the count full before surrendering a bases-clearing double, which gave the Smokies a 7-3 lead they would not relinquish.
With the loss, the Barons fell to 40-49 and 11-8 in the second half while the Smokies improved to 45-44 and 12-8 in the second half. The Barons will have an off-day on Wednesday before heading on the road for a five-game series against the Jackson Generals starting Thursday. The Barons will send RHP Mike Recchia (4-2, 2.83) to the hill in game one against LHP Tyler Olson (3-4, 4.22). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT on Thursday.
