Kingsport Axmen News Release

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (July 7, 2014) - It's a good rule to expect the unexpected at the rookie-level of minor league baseball, but Monday night's game at Hunter Wright Stadium was one for the books.

In one of the craziest Kingsport Mets home games in recent memory, the K-Mets rallied for an improbable 16-11 victory over Pulaski.

Kingsport (8-10) won despite committing eight errors. The K-Mets also rallied three times. First, Kingsport put on a hitting display to erase an early 2-0 lead and seize a 7-2 advantage. The Mets squandered all of it, with Pulaski grabbing the 8-7 advantage in the sixth. Kingsport promptly tied it at 8, then yielded three unearned runs in the top of the eighth.

Was it over? Hardly. The K-Mets hung an eight-spot on Pulaski in the bottom of the eighth, with 12 Kingsport hitters coming to the plate and the team combining for five hits and a trio of hit-by-pitches from Pulaski reliever Jarrett Brown (1-1).

Pulaski took the 2-0 lead on a double off the wall in the first inning by Carlton Tanabe.

Kingsport answered in the bottom half, with its first five batters reaching base. A two-run double by Eudor Garcia tied it, and a Luis Ortega single gave Kingsport a 3-2 lead. The K-Mets ultimately scored five in the first inning, and added two more on Oswald Caraballo's authoritative home run to left-center.

In the eighth, Ortega and Vicente Lupo each tallied a two-run double.

All 11 Kingsport position players contributed at least a hit or a run scored. Caraballo finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Ortega had three RBIs, and was one of four K-Mets to enjoy a two-hit night. Luis Guillorme had three hits and two runs scored, also driving in the tying run in the sixth, before he was hit in the helmet by a pitch and left the game as a precaution.

Eudor Garcia also had to leave the game, suffering an apparent leg injury in the fifth while making the play on a groundball.

These two teams play the rubber game of this Appy League series on Tuesday. First pitch is 7 p.m.

K-METRICS: Caraballo came in with a higher batting average (.264) than on base percentage (.254).

NOTES: The first inning lasted 35 minutes, but it was just a harbinger of things to come in a game that went 3 hours, 32 minutes. ... The Kingsport Mets were held to four hits in Sunday's 4-1 loss to Pulaski. Kingsport had five hits in the first inning on Monday. ... Jean Rodriguez replaced Garcia at third base in the fifth inning. ... Gianfranco Wawoe had three hits and three runs scored out of Pulaski's leadoff spot. ... Bryce Beeler (1-0) pitched the final 1 2-3 innings to record the win for Kingsport, benefiting from the K-Mets' huge eighth at the plate.
