Wada Recalled by Chicago for Double-Header
July 8, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Omaha, NE - The Chicago Cubs have recalled LH Tsuyoshi Wada from triple-A Iowa. Wada will be the club's "26th man" and start game two of tonight's double-header against the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs have promoted RHP Dae-Eun Rhee from double-A Tennessee to Iowa. Rhee will start tonight for the I-Cubs in Omaha.
Wada is 9-5 with a 2.66 ERA (30ER/101.2IP) in 17 games (16 starts) with Iowa this season. Wada currently ranks second in the Pacific Coast League with 105 strikeouts, is tied for third in wins, and fifth in ERA. Among starting pitchers, he is fifth in the league in strikeouts per nine innings (9.18) and fewest base runners per nine innings (10.64).
Wada was the Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month in April after posting a 3-1 record and a 0.68 ERA (2ER/26.1IP) with 29 strikeouts in four starts. He was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for April 3-13 to open the season and was selected to the PCL All-Star Team. Wada was added to Chicago's 40-man roster on June 22 and optioned to Iowa.
Wada's start tonight will be his Major League debut. He spent the last two seasons recovering from injury and pitching for triple-A Norfolk in the Baltimore Orioles' organization. Wada pitched nine seasons for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in his native Japan from 2003-11. He was Nippon Professional Baseball MVP in 2010, the Pacific League Rookie of the Year in 2003, and a four-time All-Star for the Hawks.
Rhee is 5-4 with a 3.27 ERA (38ER/104.2IP) in 18 games (16 starts) at Tennessee this season. Tonight will be his triple-A debut. He has spent most of the last two seasons with the Smokies, but was limited last year by a shoulder injury. The Cubs signed Rhee as a non-drafted free agent on August 15, 2007. The 25-year-old hails from Seoul, South Korea.
The Cubs play game two of a four-game series in Omaha tonight at 7:05 PM. RH Aaron Brooks (7-2, 3.79) will be on the mound for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
