Rox top Bravehearts in rain-shortened game

WORCESTER, Mass. - In his first start back from the disabled list, Worcester Bravehearts starter Kyle Slinger struggled against the Eastern Division-leading Brockton Rox, who became the first team to win 20 games in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League this season.
Slinger dropped to 2-1 on the year after allowing four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched, as the visiting Rox upended the Bravehearts 4-1 on July 7 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The game was shortened to six innings due to an extensive lightning delay that began before the seventh inning got underway.
After loading the bases on a walk and two singles in the first inning, Slinger surrendered a bases- clearing double to Brockton shortstop Zack Short. Short finished 2-3 in the game, and collected all three RBI on the double. Despite falling behind 4-0, Bravehearts pitcher Evan Devico quieted the Brockton bats, as he struck out three and allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
However, it was not enough to match Rox starter Andrew David who held Worcester to just three hits in six innings pitched. David struck out three and did not allow a walk to pick up his third win of the season and improve to 3-2.
Worcester got its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hopedale, Mass., native and Bravehearts center fielder Ian Strom scored on a throwing error by Brockton second baseman Zach Littman.
The 17-9 Bravehearts will take on the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at 7 p.m. July 8 in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
