Canaries Lose Series Finale in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, KS - The Canaries were unable to salvage their series in Kansas City with a split, instead dropping a third straight contest by a score of 7-4. A four-run 7th inning for Kansas City proved to be the difference and the Canaries will head on to Wichita for a three game series beginning on Monday.

Ben Moore was denied his 54th win in a Sioux Falls uniform which would have given him the franchise career record. The righthander allowed five runs in 6.1 innings on seven hits, while striking out eight and not walking a batter. He was pulled with the game tied and having thrown just 76 pitches.

The Canaries got on the board in the 1st when Chris Duffy singled in Steve Tinoco to put the Birds on top 1-0. After TJ Mittelstaedt tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with his 7th homerun of the year, the Canaries took the lead right back. Chris Valencia and Sam Lind each reached base on hits to start the 2nd, and Kevin Dultz's RBI groundout scored Valencia and put the Birds on top 2-1.

There would be no further scoring until the 4th when Kansas City took their first lead of the day. Bryan Sabatella, David Espinosa and Byron Wiley hit back-to-back-to-back doubles and the T-Bones were in front 3-2. Moore kept the T-Bones off the scoreboard in the 5th and 6th innings and the Canaries were able to tie and then retake the lead. In the 6th, Valencia singled in Duffy and in the 7th, the go-ahead run scored when Brandon Jones doubled in Tinoco.

A leadoff home run in the bottom of the 7th once again tied the game as Nick Schwaner took Moore deep for his first homerun of the season. Brian Erie followed with a single and was sacrificed to second. Despite Moore only having 76 pitches taken out of his arm, manager Steve Shirley took the ball from Moore with the game tied and handed it to righthander John Brebbia. Brebbia was unable to hold the lead, allowing three hits and three runs to come in. Pat Doyle and Kris Regas combined to shut down the Canaries once Kansas City had claimed that 7-4 lead. Doyle improved to 3-3, while Moore was charged with the loss and fell to 4-3. Regas earned his 12 save.

Jones and Valencia each had three hits while Duffy had two and that trio will try to stay hot as the Canaries head to Wichita for a three-game series. Wichita leads the South division and temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees this week. First pitch Monday is at 7:05 PM with the pregame show starting at 6:45 on AM 1230 & FM 98.1 KWSN.
