July 6, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
San Antonio, TX - SS Brian Bixler provided the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, as the San Antonio Missions claimed the 2-1 walk-off win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,133 fans at Wolff Stadium on Sunday evening. 2B Breyvic Valera helped lead the Cards offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
The Missions (11-6, 47-40) swung in front out of the gates against RHP Sam Gaviglio, cracking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first. Leading off the inning, 2B Cory Spangenberg drove a solo home run to left field for the 1-0 advantage.
After the leadoff shot, Gaviglio dug in and retired nine of the next 10 batters, keeping the deficit at only one run until Springfield (6-11, 40-47) evened it in the top of the fourth. Facing RHP John Hussey, 3B Patrick Wisdom crushed a triple to left-center, swinging himself to third base to start the inning. 2B Breyvic Valera then chopped an RBI single through the right side, plating Wisdom to square the score at 1-1.
Gaviglio continued to roll on the mound, keeping the Missions at only the one run through the remainder of his seven innings of work. He ended with four strikeouts and no walks allowed.
LHP Ryan Sherriff (L, 2-4) tossed a scoreless eighth, but San Antonio sparked the rally in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out double from C Austin Hedges. After Sherriff intentionally walked RF Yeison Asencio, he gave way to RHP Chris Thomas. Thomas retired the first batter he faced, but Bixler drove the game-winning RBI single to right field to bring in Hedges for the 2-1 walk-off victory for San Antonio. RHP Luis De La Cruz (W, 4-6) logged the win for San Antonio with two scoreless relief innings.
