Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Rusty Shellhorn tossed a season-high 7.2 innings and the Traverse City Beach Bums scored early and often in a 6-1 defeat of the Windy City ThunderBolts on Sunday evening at Wuerfel Park. The win marked Traverse City's second sweep of the season.

Shellhorn (3-0) dealt all day long for the Beach Bums, scattering six hits across his outing. He faced just one over the minimum in the first four innings, firing just four pitches in the fourth. The southpaw went into the eighth inning with less than 80 pitches before surrendering a two-out RBI single to Mike Torres to end his outing. Shellhorn allowed just a run on six hits in 7.2 innings with five strikeouts for the victory. Windy City managed multiple runners in just one inning, the eighth.

Meanwhile, the Traverse City offense put up all the runs they needed in the first inning thanks to some fielding miscues from Windy City. Greg Harisis reached on a bloop double to lead off the frame and scored two batters later on a Yazy Arbelo infield single. With runners on first and second and two away, Josh Miller struck out on a pitch that went to the backstop, and the catcher Doug Joyce overthrew first base, allowing Jovan Rosa to score on what was ruled a strikeout-wild pitch-error.

Rosa plated two runs in a much more conventional manner in the third inning, a two-run line drive homer to left to make it 4-0. Rosa's fourth bomb of the year was part of a 2-for-3 day with three runs scored and two RBI.

Traverse City added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two out rally. With runners at first and third, Miller singled home Rosa and was followed by Kevin Taylor, who laced an RBI single to right to open up a 6-0 lead.

Shellhorn did his part and was aided by Will Rankin and D.J. Johnson, who combined for the final four outs for the Beach Bums. Travis Tingle (4-3) started for Windy City and gave up all six runs on nine hits in six innings.

With three straight victories under their belt, the Beach Bums now take the next two days off before traveling to meet the Evansville Otters for a doubleheader on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. ET. Alex Phillips (0-4, 3.86) will get the ball for TC in the first game opposite Chad James (3-2, 5.95) while Tanner Tripp (1-3, 5.09) is scheduled to start game two against Taylor Dennis (0-0, 6.32). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:15 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
