Sacramento River Cats News Release
RENO, Nev. - Infielder Colin Walsh went 2-for-3 and tossed two one-run innings of relief but the River Cats lost to the Reno Aces by a score of 12-4 on Saturday evening at Aces Ballpark.
Reno jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using five hits and two walks to knock River Cats starter Tim Atherton out of the game after one inning of work. The Aces scored twice more in the third and three more times in the fourth before the River Cats got on the board in the top of the fifth.
Jose Martinez led off the top of the fifth with a walk, and Colin Walsh moved him over to third with a double to center field before Ryan Ortiz drove Martinez home with a single to right. Sacramento's second run crossed the plate when Walsh scored on a run-scoring groundout from Alden Carrithers. The club's third run came around to score in the sixth on a Josh Whitaker solo home run.
Atherton suffered the loss in his Triple-A debut, giving up six runs on five hits and two walks in just one inning of work. Whitaker's solo blast was his first home run of the season for the River Cats, and Walsh-making his first relief appearance of the season-gave up one run on four hits in two innings pitched.
The win was awarded to Bo Schultz, who gave up four hits and three runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Danny Dorn went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a walk, and his sixth home run, while Garrett Weber finished 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and his first home run of the season for Reno.
The loss moves Sacramento's record to 51-38 and cuts their lead over Reno in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Northern Division to 2.5 games with 14 games left between the two clubs.
The finale of the three-game set will pit Aces righty Lucas Harrell (4-1, 4.50 ERA) against a River Cats starter who is to-be-determined at 6:05 p.m. at Aces Ballpark.
