Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
BELOIT, Wis. - After his team fell behind 2-0, Quad Cities right fielder Ronnie Mitchell homered for a fifth straight game against Beloit and later added his second home run of the game in the River Bandits' 6-3 win over the Snappers that completed the visitors' first road series sweep of the season at Pohlman Field Thursday night.
Quad Cities (8-6 second half, 43-40 overall) won its ninth consecutive game against Beloit (2-11, 32-51), which also lost its ninth straight game overall. Mitchell has homered six times in his last five games against Beloit and has a team-high 12 home runs - all since he joined Quad Cities on May 1. The River Bandits hit seven home runs in the three-game sweep - the team's first three-game winning streak since June 6-8 - to finish 7-4 in a season-long 11-game road stretch.
The Snappers took the lead for the first time in the series in the third inning against River Bandits right-hander Kevin Comer (1-1). With one out, catcher Phil Pohl hit a one-out double to right-center field, and center fielder B.J. Boyd singled to center field, before shortstop Melvin Mercedes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Snappers left fielder Jaycob Brugman hit a leadoff triple to right field and scored on right fielder Tyler Marincov's sacrifice fly to left field that gave Beloit a 2-0 lead.
Mitchell began the comeback by leading off the fifth inning with a solo home run over the center-field fence off Snappers right-hander Lou Trivino (4-7). Second baseman Jose Fernandez then singled to right field, stole second base and went to third base on a groundout by catcher Brian Holberton. Designated hitter Brett Booth brought in Fernandez to tie the game, 2-2, on a groundout to first base.
After Comer completed five innings for the second time this season, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one, Quad Cities put him in line for his first Midwest League victory with a three-run sixth inning. Third baseman Marc Wik hit a one-out double to right-center field, and with two outs, first baseman Chase McDonald grounded a go-ahead RBI single into center field. Trivino departed with a 3-2 deficit, and Mitchell greeted right-hander Brendan McCurry with a two-run long ball to right field that made it 5-2. Trivino was charged with four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings to fall to 0-3 in three starts against Quad Cities.
With a three-run lead, right-hander Edison Frias began the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed a leadoff single and one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, before getting a ground ball back to the mound and foul popup to end the inning. After a 1-2-3 seventh, Frias allowed an eighth-inning leadoff single by designated hitter Chih-Fang Pan and a one-out RBI double by Brugman. But with the tying run at the plate, Frias struck out Marincov and second baseman Luis Baez. Frias allowed one earned run on three hits in three innings.
In the top of the ninth inning, Fernandez drew a leadoff walk against right-hander Joel Seddon, stole second base, advanced to third on Holberton's groundout, and scored when Marincov caught Booth's fly ball and made a wild throw up the third-base line. In the bottom of the inning, right-hander Andrew Walter retired all three batters for his seventh save in a 6-3 final. The River Bandits swept a regular season road series for the first time since winning all three games at Wisconsin Aug. 28-30, 2013.
Quad Cities opens a six-game homestand at 7 p.m. Friday against Wisconsin at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits right-hander Adrian Houser (4-3) is scheduled to face Timber Rattlers right-hander Preston Gainey (2-5) for the opener of a three-game series.
