Zephyrs' Villanueva, Roe Named to All-Star Team
July 3, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA - New Orleans Zephyrs pitchers Elih Villanueva and Chaz Roe have been named to the 2014 Pacific Coast League All-Star team.
The duo will participate in the Triple-A All-Star Game, pitting PCL All-Stars against International League All- Stars, on Wednesday, July 16 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. The 27th annual matchup will be broadcast live on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
In 17 starts for New Orleans this season, Villanueva has allowed more than three runs only once, going 8-5 with a 3.13 ERA. He is tied for fourth in the PCL in victories, ranks seventh in ERA, and opponents have batted .242 against him, the eighth-best mark in the league. Villanueva became the New Orleans career leader in strikeouts on June 18, and his 26 wins in a Zephyrs uniform are just three shy of equaling the franchise mark.
A 27th round selection by the Marlins in the 2008 draft, Villanueva previously earned Southern League All-Star recognition in 2010 with Double-A Jacksonville, when he was the Marlins' Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Roe stepped into the role as Zephyrs closer in May and proceeded to convert nine of his first 10 opportunities, en route to a 3-3 record and 3.61 ERA in 29 appearances overall. In 16 games between April 16 - June 1, Roe allowed just one earned run and 11 hits in 24 innings, posting a 0.38 ERA. He has struck out 45 batters in 42.1 innings, and has stranded 12 of the 13 baserunners he has inherited.
Originally a first-round pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2005, Roe made his Major League debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 before signing with the Marlins as a free agent in the offseason. He will be making his first All-Star appearance since earning Pioneer League honors in his pro debut in 2005.
The Zephyrs conclude a four-game series with the Round Rock Express on Thursday at 7 p.m with the annual Independence Day celebration. The first 6,000 fans will receive a mini-American flag, and the festivities include $1 sodas and draft beers, postgame fireworks and a concert with Local Option II.
For more information, or for tickets, contact the Zephyrs at (504) 734-5155.
